WV Wesleyan Ousts Shippensburg to Advance to Regional Final

BLOOMSBURG—After scoring five runs in the first inning, the Bobcats cruised to victory, as West Virginia Wesleyan College defeated Lock Haven University, 6-1, in Game Four of the NCAA Division II Softball Atlantic Regional Championship at Bloomsburg University.

Alex Whisner led-off W. Va. Wesleyan's first inning with a hit, while Stephanie St. Peter and Kashilia Young singled as well. With bases loaded, Dana Goguen walked to bring in a run, and Paige Cummings soon followed with a two-RBI single. Shelby Carlson drove in two more runs with a single to right field, as all nine Bobcats batted in the first, and West Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

Whisner doubled to score Carlson in the third inning to add to the Bobcats' lead, 6-0.

In the sixth, Lock Haven's Brittany Muthard batted Brittany Pataky home to erase the shutout and narrow the gap to 6-1. Despite their efforts, the Lady Eagles could not make up the deficit and were eliminated in the loss.

Kaitlyn Carey pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Bobcats, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in the game.

West Virginia Wesleyan will now face Bloomsburg in the regional final on Sunday. Due to impending rain, the start time of the first game has been moved forward to 10 a.m. If West Virginia Wesleyan wins the game, a second game will be played to decide the advancing team.
