BLOOMSBURG—Brittany Pataky's seventh-inning RBI-double proved to be the game winning hit, as Lock Haven University defeated Shippensburg University, 5-4, in Game Three of the NCAA Division II Softball Atlantic Regional Championship at Bloomsburg University.
Lock Haven took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, scoring both on a hit by Kelsey Mullins. In the third inning, Shippensburg responded on a two-RBI double by Emily Estep, knotting the game at 2-2.
The teams exchanged runs throughout the middle innings, and by the end of the sixth, the game was tied 4-4.
Late in the game, a steady rain began to fall in Bloomsburg, and by the last innings, both pitchers were having trouble holding on to the ball. LHU's Nicole Smith singled in the top of the seventh and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Pataky's big double to right center gave Lock Haven the go-ahead run and eventual win.
Lock Haven will now face West Virginia Wesleyan for a spot opposite Bloomsburg in Sunday's final.
