BOX SCORE
INDIANA, PA—For the second straight day the Bloomsburg University softball team was victimized by a late inning rally as IUP (Indiana, Pa.) beat the Huskies 2-1 to advance win the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional two games to none. The Crimson Hawks now advance to next week's national championship round in Salem, Va.
The Huskies took an early lead in the game when
Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore), the PSAC Central Division Athlete of the Year, led off the bottom of the first (Bloomsburg was the home team in the game) with a home run of starter Erin Holloway. Bloomsburg followed the home run with a single by
Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore). After Lazorka moved to second on a bunt,
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.
Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) though grounded in a double play to end the threat.
IUP threatened in the top of the third inning getting runners on second and third with one out. However, Huskies pitcher
Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
From there both pitchers began to dominate with the Huskies stranding a runner at second in the fifth, while IUP had a runner wiped out on a double play in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh the Huskies were three outs from forcing a third and deciding game. After the lead-off batter popped out, Raquel Rugani singled up the middle. Mary Ward then followed with a home run to center field putting the Crimson Hawks on top.
In the bottom of the seventh the Huskies went down in order sending IUP to the championship round and ending the Bloomsburg season.
IUP improves to 38-6 with the win, while the Huskies finish at 33-9.
