LONG ISLAND, NY – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team won its season opener, defeating the Panthers of Adelphi University, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon.
In a scoreless first half the Huskies were able to keep the Panthers (0-1) defense moving, dominating the shots 14-2.
The Panthers opened up the second half at the 38:01 mark with Jeanette Heimerle scoring off an assist, putting Adelphi up 1-0. A little over 10 minutes of play, Bloomsburg tied up the game 1-1 when senior
Amanda Riley (Tannersville, Pocono Mountain East) found the back of the cage off an assist from
Jaclyn Beasley (Berlin, NJ, Eastern).
Sophomore
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville, Indian Valley) would score her first goal of the season at the 64:21 mark after scoring off a pass from Riley, putting the Huskies at 2-1.
The final goal for the Huskies sealed the victory for BU, when Beasley put the ball on net after taking a pass from senior
Lindsay Danz (Rehoboth Beach, DE, Sussex Technical).
Bloomsburg held a 31-3 shots advantage and a 20-1 penalty corner advantage on the day.
Meghan Hollenbach (Blandon, Fleetwood) registered one save for the Huskies, while her counterpart Lucia Vigliotti stopped 14 BU shots.
Bloomsburg (1-0) returns to action on Saturday, September 3, when the team hosts Stonehill College for a noon start at Sports Stadium.
