Box Score BOX SCORE

CLARION—Backup tailback Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) rushed for a career-high 179 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns leading the ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies to a 45-10 win over Clarion University on Saturday. The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the year, while Clarion falls to 0-2 with the loss.

Mateo, a transfer from Stony Brook, filled in nicely for the Bloomsburg starting tailback Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) who did not play after the second quarter due to an injury. Before Quiteh departed he had carried 17 times for 114 yards.

The five TD's in one game has been done five times in school history, the last by Jamar Brittingham in 2007 against C.W. Post.

Clarion actually led 3-0 in the game after getting a field goal on the opening drive of the game. After a long kickoff return to start the game gave the Golden Eagles good starting field position, Clarion moved to the BU five yard line before the drive stalled. From there Tyler Ruark connected on a 23-yard field goal.

The Huskies responded with a 64-yard drive that included runs of 26 and 10 yards by Quiteh that moved the ball to the Clarion three-yard line. Bloomsburg's Dan Fisher then hit a 20-yard field goal to tie the score.

Later in the period the Huskies drove deep into Clarion territory, but saw the drive end when quarterback Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) was intercepted in the end zone.

Bloomsburg added to its total in the second period. After the Huskies defense stopped Clarion on a fourth and short play from inside the BU 25-yard line, Bloomsburg marched 76-yards in five plays capped by an eight-yard run by Mateo to go up 10-3. On the drive Mateo had a 40-yard run.

The Huskies added another score late in the half when Mateo scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run capping an 80-yard drive making it 17-3 at the break.

Bloomsburg started to put the game away on the opening drive of the second half. Starting at its own 40-yard line, the Huskies needed just three plays, capped by Mateo's 14-yard run, to go up 24-3. The big play on the drive was a career-long run of 35 yards by senior fullback Matt Cox (Lewisberry/Red Land).

Midway through the third period, following an interception by Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional), the Huskies made it 31-3 when Mateo ran 22 yards for his fourth score of the day. Then just before the end of the third period Mateo scored his fifth touchdown on a 38-yard run making it a 38-3 game.

In the fourth period the Huskies got their final score of the day when Nicholas DeLuca recovered a fumble in the end zone after Ryan Maggs (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) ran the ball down to the one yard line before losing control of the ball with 7:41 to play in the game.

Clarion got the final score of the day when quarterback Ben Fiscus threw a 39-yard touchdown pass making the final 45-10.

Mateo carried 17 times in the game averaging 10.5 yards per carry, while as a team the Huskies rushed for 442 yards with an average of 7.9 yards per carry.

Defensively, Pidgeon made nine tackles to lead Bloomsburg, while Jake Meyers added eight for the maroon and gold.

The Huskies will be back in action Thursday night, Sept. 15, when they play at Indiana, PA (IUP) at 8 p.m. The game can be seen nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
