BLOOMSBURG—
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a team-high 20 points to lead five players in double figures as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team beat Mansfield University on Wednesday night 84-75 in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division matchup.
The Huskies looked like they would run away with the game racing out to 10-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes of play.
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) was red-hot to start hitting four free throws and a three-pointer for seven of the team's first 10 points.
After the Huskies twice extended the lead to 12 points, the last coming at 18-6 with 13:40 to go in the half, Mansfield rallied and trimmed the lead down to seven points, 18-11, on a layup by Mallory Moore. But the Huskies responded with a 12-4 run with
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) scoring four in the rally and giving Bloomsburg its biggest lead of the game at 30-15 with 8:52 to play in the half.
Mansfield though would back down and the Mounties closed out the half with an 11-5 run to narrow the lead down to five points at the break, 41-35.
In the second half the Huskies slowly extended the lead back to double digits with Wieller's three-pointer making it a 54-44 edge for Bloomsburg and later a jumper by freshman
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) made it a 72-59 game with 8:22 to play.
The Mounties though went on a 13-3 run over a five minute stretch and cut the led to just three points, 75-72, with 3:05 to play after a three-pointer by Kayla Espigh.
After a three-pointer from Wieller made it 80-74 in favor of Bloomsburg, the closest Mansfield would get is five points when Moore hit one of two free throws with 1:38 to play. The Huskies closed out the game with a layup from
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty), who started in place of the injured
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South), and two free throws from Wieller.
For Wieller, along with her 20 points, she also dished out five assists and had four steals. Noack scored a season-high 19 points, while Oxenrider finished with 14 points,
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) 12 and Simmons off the bench with 10 points for Bloomsburg.
Moore finished with 24 points for Mansfield, now 5-10, 2-9 in the PSAC East, while Marrysa Moyer added 14.
Bloomsburg, now 14-3, 8-3 in the PSAC East, will be back in action on Saturday at West Chester at 1 p.m. in a battle for the division lead.
