Box Score BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team battled to the final whistle, but was unable to topple Millersville University as it dropped a 2-1 decision in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Sports Stadium Tuesday night.
Anthony Manero (Richboro/Council Rock North) was the lone goal scorer for the Huskies (7-7-1, 2-4-1 PSAC). He evened the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute on a header off a corner kick taken by
Miguel Diaz (Doylestown/Central Bucks East).
The score was Manero's fifth of the season, tying the junior for second on the team. He has now scored twice in BU's last four games.
Diaz's assist was his team-leading fourth of the season.
Millersville (8-6, 5-2) opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a strike from outside the 18-yard box. Andrew Dukes got the Marauders off in transition and dumped the ball forward to Matt Kadoch. Kadoch took a touch to get him under control, and bent the ball with his left foot into the left side of the goal to put the Marauders on top.
The score barely found its way past the diving attempt of Bloomsburg junior goalkeeper
Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone). Roell was active all night for the Huskies by reducing the Marauders opportunities and eliminating any clean looks at goal for Millersville attackers. He finished with one save as Millersville managed just three shots on goal.
Just under three minutes after the Manero equalizer, Millersville's Ryan Rohrer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for MU. He turned from the top of the 18-yard box and took a shot into the left side of the net to lift the Marauders to victory.
Millersville goalkeeper Brad Benzing finished with seven saves as Bloomsburg totaled five more shots than Millersville at 13-8.
The Huskies had one final chance in the 90th minute to force the game to overtime. Awarded a corner kick with 34 seconds to play, Roell left his net and charged forward to give BU an extra attacker on the ensuing corner. Unfortunately, the Marauders were able to control the attempt and clear the ball, ending the game.
The Huskies and Marauders played in a showdown of last year's PSAC Championship game in which MU earned a 1-0 victory. Tuesday night also featured a pair of regional ranked teams in the Atlantic Region. Bloomsburg entered the game ranked tenth as Millersville was rated seventh.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 to face West Chester on the road. Game time at West Chester is set for 3 p.m.
