Davis Finishes Second at PSAC XC Championships

COMPLETE RESULTS

Davis-Sprat-PSAC
SLIPPERY ROCK—Bloomsburg University women's cross country runner Vicki Davis (New Ringgold/Schuylkill Haven) finished second at the 2012 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) cross country championships on Saturday at Slippery Rock University. As a team the Huskies finished in fourth place with Shippensburg winning the team title.

Davis, who was fourth at the championships a year ago, was in the lead pack right from the start of the race running with Shippensburg's Katie Spratford. The pair covered the first mile in 5:25 setting a pace that put the two of them way out in front. From there Davis and Spratford ran hip to hip setting up what would be a big finish.

With 800 meters to go, both runners were still side by side before Davis was able to get a few steps on Spratford with about 400 meters to go. Down the stretch, with just 75 meters left, Spratford made one final dash to the finish with a big kick. Davis, though, was not able to answer and went on to finish second behind the Shippensburg runner.

Davis covered the 6,000 meter course in 21:42 with Spratford posting a mark of 21:32, but the time separation was not indicative of the closeness of the race. Davis' second place finish also earned her All-PSAC honors which go to the top 20 finishers.

"It was a very exciting race with the outcome only established in the last 75m of a 6000m race," said Huskies coach Bernie Empie. " The last time that a Bloomsburg cross country runner had finished as high as 2nd at PSAC's was 1993 (Tina Wikoski) so this is pretty exciting.  Vicki has worked hard to return to her high level of fitness after her achilles injury in the spring.  We are very happy with how the women ran today.  They have steadily improved throughout the season and are running their best when the biggest meets arrive."

Behind Davis for the Huskies was Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) in 25th place in 23:34, while Lauren Lehman (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) was 31st in 23:41. The next three Huskies were tightly packed with Kelsey Harm (Boothwyn/Cardinal O'Hara) in 40th in 24:07, Lauren Bond (Hatfield/North Penn) 41st in 24:08 and Shelby Pealer (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) 43rd in 24:11.  Courtney Werner (Hudson, OH/Hudson) was seventh for the Huskies and 60th overall in 24:46.

The Huskies will be back in action on Nov. 3 at Lock Haven for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships.
