LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
—Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor)' 18 points and eight rebounds led the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 74-71, double overtime victory over Lincoln University Saturday afternoon. The game was physical for both teams with 70 total fouls called and a combined seven players fouling out and 97 free throws between the teams.
The Huskies were trailing 58-52 with 5:04 left in regulation before outscoring the Lions 8-2 down the stretch to force OT. Senior
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) was fouled with two seconds left in regulation and hit both free throws hit to force the extra session.
In the first overtime the Huskies led by a bucket twice, but Lincoln's Denyse Moore rebounded her missed shot and scored at the buzzer to force the second overtime.
In the second overtime the Huskies trailed Lincoln 70-69 with 2:07 to go, but outscored the Lions 5-1 to pull out the win. Ellis' layup with 1:51 put Bloomsburg on top for good 71-70, while her free throw with 20 seconds left gave the Huskies a three-point advantage. Moore's three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark for the Lions giving the Huskies the win.
In the opening half of the game the Huskies led by as many as seven points, 22-15, with 9:22 to go in the first half. Lincoln, though, rallied and took a one-point lead, 23-22 with 6:01 to play, and then later held a 32-31 edge with a minute to play. But, the Huskies closed out the half with a basket by
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) and a free throw from
Maggie Borski (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) to lead by two at the break, 34-32.
In the second half the Huskies twice had five point leads, the last at 45-40, with 14:08 to go. Lincoln came roaring back using an 18-7 run over the next nine minutes to lead 58-52 setting up the late game heroics for Bloomsburg.
Along with Ellis' 18 points, Wieller added 12 and
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) 10. Lincoln got a game-high 33 points from Moore.
The Huskies, 2-0, head to Villanova for an exhibition game Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
