LOCK HAVEN—Bloomsburg University women's cross country runner
Vicki Davis (New Ringgold/Schuylkill Haven) finished second at the 2012 NCAA Atlantic Regional championships hosted by Lock Haven University on Saturday.
Davis' second place finish earns her All-Region honors for the second straight year and qualifies her for the NCAA Division II national champion ships on Nov. 17 in Joplin, MO.
As a team the Huskies finished fifth with a total of 206 points with Shippensburg winning the regional title with 70 points.
For the second straight race Davis, who covered the 6k course in 20:47, finished second behind Shippensburg's Katie Spratford in a time of 20:20. Davis and Spratford separated themselves from the other runners early into the race and neither ever looked back.
After speeding through the first mile in 5:23, both had built a lead of over 15 seconds. By mile two, Spratford extended her lead over Davis, who held a commanding gap over anyone else in the field. Davis held that margin throughout the remainder of the race and finished easily in the second position. Her time was 17 seconds faster than she ran last year on the same course in the PSAC Championships.
"I am extremely excited for Vicki," said head coach
Bernie Empie. "She had worked hard and made some sacrifices that have allowed her to take her running to the next level. I expect she will challenge for the highest finish by a woman from Bloomsburg University at an NCAA Championship in Joplin in two weeks.Stratford ran a similar time a year ago and finished 10th at NCAA's. Vicki should certainly be a top-20 contender."
"As a team, we finished fifth -- down a spot from PSAC's," Empie added. "The other schools in the PSAC are very competitive, sometimes it only takes one athlete to have a breakout day or an off day and it can completely change the team scores. We had some runners run particularly well and a few others that were not at their best. That is all it took to drop us a spot this week. I'm proud of their efforts and despite not having the outcome we all wanted today, we had a good season."
Behind Davis for the Huskies was
Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) in 32nd place in a time 22:13, while
Lauren Bond (Hatfield/North Penn) was 54th in 22:49 and
Lauren Lehman (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) 57th in 22:51.
Rounding out the top five for Bloomsburg and 61st overall was
Shelby Pealer (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) in 22:59 with
Courtney Werner (Hudson, OH/Hudson) rounding out the Huskies top five in 64th in 23:01. Additionally,
Courtney Werner (Hudson, OH/Hudson) finished in 23:01 with
Kelsey Harm (Boothwyn/Cardinal O'Hara) in 23:21.
