BLOOMSBURG – Prolific three-point shooting and a late 24-4 run lifted the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 30-point, 84-54 victory over Chestnut Hill College Friday evening in a season-opening non-conference matchup at Nelson Field House.
The Huskies (1-0 overall) were led offensively by senior guard
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley)'s game-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She filled up the stat sheet with three three-pointers, six rebounds, five assists, and a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line.
Oxenrider's shooting at the charity stripe was part of a 16-for-17 outing for the Huskies. BU didn't miss a free throw until there were 38 seconds left in the game.
Fellow seniors
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) and
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) also finished in double figures in scoring for Bloomsburg. Wieller helped the Huskies build its lead to 17 at the break as she made five three-pointers and scored 15 of her 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Wieller's five buckets from beyond the arc helped the Huskies shoot 40 percent from three-point range on 12-for-30 shooting. Dating back to last season, it is the fourth straight game Bloomsburg has shot over 40 percent from long distance as it led the conference last year at 37.4 percent.
Ellis notched her third career double-double Friday, the first on her home floor. She had a career-high 13 rebounds, eight coming in the first half, and scored 10 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Huskies. Ellis made all six of her free throw attempts.
Junior
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) made her seventh career start in her third year in the maroon and gold. Looking to be the every-game starter for BU this season, Noack got her teammates involved offensively and dished out a career-high five assists.
As a team, Bloomsburg registered 20 assists to just 12 turnovers while forcing 26 Griffin (0-1) turnovers.
Both teams held the lead in the opening minutes, however, Bloomsburg senior guard
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) kick-started the offense with four straight points and six overall in an eventual 14-1 run to open the Huskies lead to 15 at 24-9 with 6:28 to play in the first half. Flanagan finished with eight points and three steals.
The Huskies closed out the half with six of its final seven made field goals coming off three-pointers to hold a 44-27 lead at the break. 10 of BU's 12 three's came in the first half.
The Griffins put together a 12-3 run midway through the second half to cut the Huskies lead to 10 at 57-47. Senior guard Latoya Laing made two of Chestnut Hill's three three-pointers in the run. Laing led the team in scoring with 17.
Bloomsburg responded with a lengthy 24-4 run spanning over eight minutes to hold an 81-51 lead with less than three minutes to play, its largest lead of the game.
Junior forward
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) was highly used in the offensive attack in the paint for Bloomsburg. She scored nine points and controlled the paint in her 15 minutes on the floor.
Along with Laing, sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski had an effective offensive night and chipped in 13 points and a team-high three assists. The duo combined for seven on the teams' eight three-pointers.
Aimee Bouie grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with seven points. As a team, the Griffins shot just 37.5 percent (6-for-16) at the free throw line.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 as it travels to Lincoln University for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
