INDIANA – The 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped a 68-54 decision on the road to 12th-ranked Indiana University (PA) Tuesday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest at the Kovalchick Complex.
The Huskies (5-2, 2-2 PSAC), ranked 22nd in Tuesday's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, trailed the Crimson Hawks (7-1, 3-1) by one at halftime, but shot just 25 percent and saw IUP make 23 free throws in the second half.
Three Huskies scored a team-high nine points, marking the first time this season no one finished in double figures. Seniors
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) and
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty), along with sophomore
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) scored nine points as Wieller also dished out a team-high five assists.
Sophomore
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) had a career-high six steals against the Crimson Hawks, five of which coming in the first half.
Junior guard
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) got the Huskies off on a roll with back-to-back three-pointers on Bloomsburg's opening two possessions. In doing so, Noack moved in 10th all-time in school history with 107 career three-pointers.
From there, IUP went on an 18-4 run to take an 18-10 lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half. Turnovers plagued the Huskies during the early Crimson Hawk run, as they turned it over nine times during the IUP run. For the game, however, Bloomsburg won the turnover battle by forcing 25 while surrendering 20.
Bloomsburg responded to the IUP run with a 9-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 23-22 with 43 seconds to play in the half. The Huskies hit three of their four field goals and made a pair of free throws during the run. IUP hit a jumper with 33 seconds remaining to take a 24-23 advantage at the break.
After IUP worked its way to a double-digit lead midway through the second half, Wieller and Ford turned in a pair of successful trips to the free throw line with under nine minutes to play to bring the game to three at 45-42. From there, IUP went inside and put together a 9-1 run for an 11-point lead with 4:14 to play.
A Wieller three-pointer with 2:17 to play cut the IUP lead to single digits with 2:17 to play at 61-52. IUP then rattled off seven unanswered to lead by a game-high 16 in the final minute before a late Oxenrider jumped closed the scoring for the Huskies.
The late three-pointer was Wieller's first and only field goal of the night, as her nine-point effort broke a streak of 23 straight games of scoring in double figures.
IUP's Sarah Pastorek scored a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds. She was 10-for-13 at the charity stripe in 39 minutes on the floor. Also scoring in double figures were Marita Mathe with 14, and Talen Watson with 11.
IUP out-rebounded Bloomsburg 41-31, and made nine more free throws as 23 of its 26 free throws came in the second half.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, Wednesday Dec. 19, and look to get back in the win column as they take on California (PA) in a PSAC contest set to tip at 5:30 p.m.
