PHILADELPHIA – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team trailed Philadelphia University by one at halftime, but put together a 44-12 second-half run spanning the majority of the second half to earn an 86-65 road victory Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center.
Bloomsburg (7-2) trailed by as many as six in the first half and trailed by one, 34-33, at halftime. With Philadelphia (6-5) leading 41-37 with 18:01 to play, Bloomsburg went on a 44-12 run to hold an 81-53 lead with 3:19 to play. The lengthy run spanned 14:42 and was capped off with the Huskies holding a game-high 28-point advantage.
The Huskies shot 56.4 percent in the second half while holding the Rams to 29.6 percent in the second half. Bloomsburg was content on going down to the paint to find its scoring as it had 56 points in the paint.
Senior forward
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Huskies, the most points by a Bloomsburg player this season. She grabbed 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, her first since the season-opener against Chestnut Hill. Seven of her 11 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Ellis shot 12-for-13 from the field to help Bloomsburg shoot 52.2 percent for the game. It is the second highest percentage of the season behind the 57.4 percent outing against Edinboro. Ellis also recorded a career-high three blocks. She has 77 in her career and needs one to move into a tie for eighth in BU history.
Ellis' presence on the glass helped the Huskies dominate the rebounding battle by 18 at 45-27. 19 of Bloomsburg's 45 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Senior
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) notched her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists. The third-leading scorer in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Wieller's 11 assists topped a previous best of seven set against East Stroudsburg last season. It is the most assists by a Bloomsburg player this season. Wieller also grabbed four steals.
As a team, Bloomsburg had 26 assists, more than nine than its season-average of 16.63 per game.
Bloomsburg had 38 points off the bench, the second highest output of the season.
Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) and
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) each scored 12 points. Derr grabbed eight rebounds and Simmons grabbed six, four of which coming on the offensive end. Both players dished out two assists.
Sophomore
Maggie Borski (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) scored a career-high 10 points and had four assists, good for second on the team. Borski tied her previous career-high of three steals and has continued to progress at the point guard position this season.
Senior guard
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) rounded out the six Huskies to score in double figures with 10 points. She had three rebounds and made all three of her free throws.
Junior guard
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) made the first start of her career Sunday. She had two steals in 13 minutes on the floor.
With Philadelphia leading by four two minutes into the second half, Bloomsburg went on an 8-0 run to lead 45-41. Simmons forced the Rams to take a timeout after grabbing an offensive rebound and laying it in for two to give Bloomsburg a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
In the first half with Bloomsburg trailing 15-9 just over five minutes into play, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-15 lead off a Borski layup at the 12:36 mark of the first half. Bloomsburg forced a pair of turnovers as Ellis scored four points and Simmons chipped in a layup during the run.
Borski hit a pair of free throws to extend the Bloomsburg lead to four, 21-17, its largest lead of the first half.
The Rams put together a 7-0 run late in the first half to lead by five at 34-29. The Huskies missed four layups in the Philadelphia run. Derr responded with a pair of put-back layups to cut the Philadelphia lead to 34-33 at halftime.
Monica Schacker led the Rams with 17 points in 24 minutes off the bench. She drained a game-high five three-pointers. Najah Jacobs scored 10 points in the setback as Kristen Blye led Philadelphia in rebounding with eight.
The Huskies return to action in the New Year as they close out their season-long road trip on Jan 4-5, 2013 in Erie, Pa. to take on Gannon and Mercyhurst. Tipoff for both matchups is set for 5:30 p.m.
