KUTZTOWN—
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) of the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team (22-4, 16-4 PSAC) scored a game high 19 points to lead the Huskies past Kutztown University (7-19, 5-15 PSAC), 69-50. Bloomsburg used a 46 point second half effort to power past the Golden Bears for their 22nd win of the season.
Kutztown opened the game by going up 6-1 before the Huskies took a slim 7-6 lead at the 11:44 mark of the first half. Bloomsburg's lead was short lived as the Golden Bears pieced together an 8-0 run to take 14-7 lead with 7:38 left in the first.
From there Bloomsburg cut the lead to four points before going back down by eight points at the 2:43 mark.
Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) knocked down a three pointer on Bloomsburg's next possession before
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) hit a three of her own following a stop on defense to cut the Kutztown lead to 20-18.
Kutztown would knock down one of two free throw attempts before Wieller hit another three to tie things up at 21-21 with 1:15 left in the half. Advia Campbell put Kutztown up by two with a layup with just under a minute to play.
With time running out of the first half, Wieller popped a jumper only to have it blocked by Kutztown's Aly York. BU freshman
Maggie Borski (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) would recover the loose ball and lay it in to tie the game at 23-23 entering halftime.
The Huskies opened the second half with an 18-5 run to take a thirteen point lead, 41-28.
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) fueled the BU run with nine points. Six of her points came on made threes and the other three came on an old-fashioned three point play. Bloomsburg controlled the rest of the game, leading by as many as 23 points and had their lead fall to as low as only 10 points.
Four Bloomsburg players finished in double figures as Oxenrider led all scorers with 19 points which included three made three pointers and a 6-for-7 mark from the free throw line. Gallagher finished with 15 points while assisting on four baskets along with grabbing five rebounds.
Danielle Derr (Dresner/Upper Dublin) and Wieller were Bloomsburg's two other double figure scorers as they scored 12 points apiece. Derr also finished with six rebounds while Wieller grabbed another five.
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) led the team with 11 rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
Steph Zewe led the Golden Bears with a double-double effort with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Andrea Sisson chipped in another 10 points.
Bloomsburg will be back in action as they return to the Nelson Field House on Wednesday, February 22 as they host East Stroudsburg University. Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
