LAKEWOOD, NJ—The 18
th-ranked Bloomsburg University softball team opened its 2012 season by sweeping a twinbill from Georgian Court University by scores of 3-0 and 10-1 in five innings.
In the opener pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 12 to earn the victory. Paine got all the run support she needed in the first inning.
With one out the Huskies put together singles by
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone),
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) and Rachell Fredell to lead the bases.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then followed with a double to left field scoring Baer and Pientack. After a flyout,
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled scoring Fredell with the innings third run.
From there Paine took over and was dominant. She allowed no more than one in any inning and struckout the side in both the third and fourth innings fanning seven straight overall at one point.
Paine did run into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh when the Lions loaded the bases, but Paine got a strikeout to end the game.
In game two, the Huskies used a six-run second inning to grab a big lead and coasted to the easy 10-1 win called after five innings by the mercy rule.
In the top of the second
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) singled and went to third on a double by
Lyndsay Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley).
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) then singled home Leach to make it 1-0.
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) then grounded out with Busler coming into score. Baer doubled home a run and
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) singled home one to make it 4-0. Pientack then blasted a two-run homer for a six-run inning.
The Huskies added two runs in the third on a double by Baer and got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The only run allowed by the Huskies came in the Georgian Court fourth inning when they collected three hits.
Paine went the first four innings to get the win with
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) tossing the last inning and getting two strikeouts.
Baer finished the game 2-3 with three RBI, while Pientack was 2-4 with two RBI.
The Huskies, 2-0, play at Bowie (MD) State on Sunday at noon.
