BU-ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC BOX SCORE
FLORENCE, SC—The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Patriot Invitational in Florence, SC. The Huskies beat Armstrong Atlantic 4-3 after dropping the opener 1-0 to Queens University of Charlotte.
In game two of the day the Huskies got off to a quick start when
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) hit a solo homer to give pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
After the Pirates tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, the Huskies added regained the lead in the fourth when Pientack went deep for the second time after
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) singled leading off the inning.
In the sixth the Huskies got what would turn out to be the winning run when
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) doubled to lead off. Yanora then reached on a fielder's choice with Baer out at their third. After Pientack walked and
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) singled to load the bases,
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) reached on an error scoring Yanora with the fourth run.
Bloomsburg would need the run after Armstrong Atlantic scored two runs with two outs to make it 4-3 before the Huskies got the final out for the victory.
Pientack went 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Baer went 2-4. Paine earned the win striking out 12 and walking just one.
In game one Queens scored one run in the top of the first inning and made it stand up in handing the Huskies their first loss of the season.
Queens took advantage of a leadoff walk and a couple of errors to score a run in the top of the first inning against starter
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area).
Bloomsburg's best chance to score came in the third inning.
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) walked to lead off the inning. After a fly out, Baer singled with Leach going to second. A bunt moved the runners up to second and third. However, Queens got a ground out to end the inning and keep the 1-0 lead.
For the Huskies Paine came in relief of Black in the second inning and went the final six innings and fanned 10 and allowed just two hits.
Bloomsburg, 7-1, will face Francis Marion and Armstrong Atlantic on day two of the invitational.
