Softball team Splits Pair of Games with Wingate

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

WINGATE, NC--Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) hit three home runs tying a school record to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a split of its doubleheader with Wingate University on Monday afternoon. The Huskies won game two 9-5 after dropping the opener 1-0.

In the nightcap of the day the Huskies fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but rallied in the top of the second. Lyndsay Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch with Belko hitting the first of her home runs to left center field to tie the score at 2-2.

In the top of the fourth Belko led off the inning with solo homer to put Bloomsburg on top 3-2. After a single by Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) and a pop out, Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) grounded into a fielder's choice with Moir out on the play. Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) reached on an error and Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) singled to load the bases. Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) then delivered a double scoring two runs with a third run scoring on a throwing error to make it 6-2.

In the fifth inning the Huskies made it 8-2 when Leach tripled home two runs. In the bottom of the fifth Wingate scored three times off Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) to close the Huskies lead to 8-5.

Wingate had two on in the bottom of the sixth when Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) relieved O'Connor and worked out of the jam keeping it an 8-5 game. The Huskies added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Belko went deep for the third time to make the final 9-5.

Belko tied the school record set by Becca Kehler against Tiffin in 2002, while going 3-4 with four RBI in the game.

In game one the Huskies managed just four hits in falling to the Bulldogs. Wingate scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second getting a leadoff single and a one-out double to score.

The Huskies best chance to score came in the third inning when Bloomsburg got runners at second and third with two outs, but Wingate retired Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) on a ground out to end the inning. In the seventh inning the Huskies did get a two-out single, but a line out to shortstop ended the game.

Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) suffered the loss for the Huskies allowing just four hits, while fanning 11 and not allowing a walk.

With the split the Huskies go to 10-2, while Wingate goes to 17-11. Bloomsburg plays at Catawba on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
