SALISBURY, NC—The Bloomsburg University softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday falling to Catawba College, 5-4 in 11 innings in game one and 5-3 in game two.
In the opener the Huskies trailed 1-0 in the top of the second when
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) hit a solo homer, her fourth home run in the last two games, to tie the game at 1-1. The game stayed tied till the sixth when Bloomsburg went on top 2-1 when
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) scored on a sacrifice fly by Belko.
After Catawba tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies had a chance to go back on top in the seventh getting two runners on base, but could not bring around the go-ahead run.
Going to extra innings the Huskies scored twice in the top of the ninth with Leach singling to right scoring Belko and Fredell. In the bottom of the ninth the Indians rallied again. Starting the inning with a runner on second base with the tie-breaking rule, Tara Gibbs then followed with a two-run homer knotting the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the 10th Catawba score the game winning run with one out.
Pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) struck out 14 in suffering the loss for Bloomsburg.
In the nightcap the game was scoreless in the top of the fourth inning when Pientack led off with a solo homer. Catawba scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Bloomsburg went back on top with two runs in the top of the sixth. Pientack reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out.
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) singled with Pientack taking third.
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) scoring Pientack and tying the game at 2-2.
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) then reach on error with O'Connor coming in to score and giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth Catawba came back with three runs on two hits and took advantage of one error to go back on top, 5-4.
Bloomsburg did threaten getting two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but did not score.
The Huskies, 10-4, play at Winston-Salem on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
