Pientack Leads Softball Team to Sweep

BOWIE, MD—Senior Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) went a combined six for eight , hit three homers and drove in eight runs and scored six times to lead the 18th-ranked Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of Bowie State on Sunday. The Huskies won game one 10-1 in five innings and won the nightcap 12-5.
 
In the opener Bloomsburg got pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) all the runs she would need when Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) walked to lead off and went to second on a single by Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) drove them home with a single making it 2-0.
 
The Huskies added to their lead in the third when Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) doubled home Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) and Lyndsay Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) for a 4-0 lead.
 
After Bowie State got a run in the bottom of the fourth, Bloomsburg put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth inning. In the inning Pientack hit a two run homer, Yanora had a two-run single with Leach and Baer each driving in one run.
 
Pientack went 2-4 with four RBI in game one, while Yanora went 3-3 with two RBI. Paine went five innings allowing just one hit and striking out six.
 
In game two the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out Baer doubled then came home on a two-run homer by Pientack. The Bulldogs got one run back in the bottom of the second when Cassandra Clayborne walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
 
The Huskies added to their lead in the top of the third. With one out Baer singled and moved to second on the throw. Pientack then followed with her second two-run homer of the game to make it a 4-1 game.
 
Bloomsburg made it 5-1 in the fourth when Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) doubled and scored on a triple by Yanora. Bowie State tied the score at 5-5 by scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth.
 
The tie didn't last long as the Huskies came back and regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Pientack was hit by a pitch leading off, while Fredell walked putting runners at first and second. After a strikeout, Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled home Pientack to made it 6-5. After another strikeout, Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) followed with a two-run single making it 8-5. The Huskies tacked on one run in the sixth and three more runs in the seventh to win 12-5.
 
Pientack finished game two three for four with five runs scored and two homers. Paine picked up the win in relief going four innings and allowing three hits.
 
The Huskies, 4-0, will play Shepherd University on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
