BLOOMSBURG—On a rainy day at Hutchinson Field, the Bloomsburg University softball team (19-7, 1-1 PSAC Central) split a pair of games with the Raiders of Shippensburg (9-17 1-3 PSAC East). The Huskies dominated game one, winning 8-0 in five innings but fell in game two, 12-3.
GAME ONE
In the opener pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the Huskies to an 8-0 win. Paine fanned seven along the way and was in trouble just once when Shippensburg put two runners on base with two outs in the top of the fifth. Paine, though, got a pop up to end the game.
Bloomsburg's offense put four runs on the board in each of the first two innings. In the first the Huskies loaded the bases for
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) who singled to center. On the play
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) scored and
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) came around when the throw to the infield was slow coming in.
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) then doubled down the left field line scoring two more runs making it 4-0.
In the bottom of the second
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) walked and McHale singled putting runners at first and second.
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) then tripled home two runs.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then delivered a deep home run to left making it a 8-0 game.
GAME TWO
Shippensburg scored seven runs in the first two innings and had 17 hits to power their way to a 12-3 win. The Raiders scored three two-out runs in the first inning which was followed by another four runs in the second inning. Bloomsburg had three errors in the second inning which forced Paine out of the game in the second inning. Her record stands at 11-4 on the season.
Pientack trimmed the Shippensburg lead to five as she smashed her 12th homerun of the season. Her two run shot was her fourth RBI of the afternoon.
The Raiders got a run back in the fourth inning as they scored an unearned run to go up 8-2.
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) brought the score to 8-3 as she slapped a solo shot to right center field in the fifth inning. Shippensburg, though, scored four more runs in the seventh inning along with holding the Huskies scoreless which gave them their ninth win of the season.
Kuhns was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Pientack was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Bloomsburg will back in action on Tuesday, April 3 as the Huskies host the Crimson Hawks of Indiana Pa. in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
