Late Heroics Leads to Two Walk-Off Wins for Softball

BOX SCORE GAME ONE | BOX SCORE GAME TWO

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team (26-8, 8-2 PSAC Central) picked up a pair of extra inning walk-off wins against the Mountaineers of Mansfield University (17-10, 5-5 PSAC Central) this afternoon.  Bloomsburg's Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) smashed a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth in game one to guide the Huskies to a 4-2 win.  Then in game two, Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) dribbled a two-out single past the pitcher to give Bloomsburg a 6-5 walk-off win in 10 innings.

GAME ONE
Mansfield's Kate Pratt gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a homerun to dead center field.  Five innings later Danielle Long yanked a homer to left field to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

Bloomsburg got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) scored on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley).  The following inning Mandy leach tied things up at 2-2 as she scored on a sac-fly by Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock)

Mansfield stranded a runner at second base in the top of the eighth as BU starting pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) shut down the Mountaineer offense.  Bloomsburg headed to the bottom of the eighth with a chance for the win.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) worked a walk to lead off the inning.  Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) then stepped to the plate and delivered a towering two-run shot to right field to give the Huskies a 4-2 walk-off win.

For the Huskies, Paine received the win as she struck out 14 batters and scattered four hits in her 15th win of the year.  At the plate, Pientack was 1-for-3 with a 2 RBI and a run scored while Leach was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME TWO
The Huskies opened the second leg of the doubleheader by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Fredell singled through the left side to bring home Baer.  Bloomsburg saw the one run advantage disappear in the third as the Mountaineers scored four runs in the top of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Bloomsburg cut the Mountaineer lead to two runs on a solo shot by Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) in the fourth inning.  An inning later Pientack smacked her second homer of the afternoon to tie things at 4-4 in the fifth.  Her two homeruns bumps her season total to 15.

Both teams were held scoreless over the next four innings as the game entered the 10th inning.  In the 10th both teams start the inning with a runner at second base and for Mansfield it would be Chara Dixon.  Dixon would eventually score on an infield double by Danielle Long in which a fly ball took an unfavorable bounce off a BU player and went into foul territory allowing Dixon to score.  It would be Mansfield's only run of the inning.

Baer would start on second base for the Huskies in the 10th as Pientack led off the inning for the Huskies.  Pientack was intentionally walked for the second straight at-bat which put runners on first and second.  BU's next batter, Fredell, would ground out to the shortstop but not before advancing both runners to second and third.

Belko was up next for the Huskies but would go down swinging, putting the Mountaineers just one out away from a victory.  However, a wild pitch from Emily Crandell allowed Pientack to reach third and Baer to score, tying the game at 5-5.

With two outs, two strikes and a runner on third, Leach looked to give BU the win.  She would eventually push a slow roller past the pitcher and would reach safely which in turn allowed Pientack to slide home for a 6-5 walk-off win in 10 innings.

Although she did not get the start, Paine did get the win as she tossed 7.2 innings of one run ball.  She struck out seven in the process and the one run she did allow was unearned.

At the plate the Huskies were again led by Pientack's two RBI as she went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.  Baer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Leach was held to one hit which turned out to be the biggest of game two.

The Huskies will be back in action on Friday, April 13th as Bloomsburg travels to take on Indiana Pa. in a PSAC Central doubleheader.  Game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
