Huskies Split with IUP in Softball

Rachel Fredell Went a Combined 4-7 in doubleheader with IUP

INDIANA, PA—The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games with IUP on Friday winning the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap 12-4 in five innings.
 
In the opener Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) tossed a four-hitter and struck out 15 to lead Bloomsburg to the 2-1 win. Paine was dominant throughout allowing just two hits in an inning one time, while striking out the side three times. In the seventh inning she fanned the side with the final strikeout coming with the game-winning run at the plate.
 
The Huskies got on the board first in the fourth inning. Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) doubled to lead off the inning. Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then singled scoring Fredell and went to second on an error by the centerfielder. Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) then singled with Fredell going to third. But IUP got out of the inning with a double play and a pop up.
 
In the fifth the Huskies made it 2-0 when the Huskies put two runners on with one out. Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) then followed with a single scoring Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone).  IUP cut the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth when Jasa Mitchell doubled home a run.
 
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, IUP put a runner on via an error. But Paine fanned Christi Mauk swinging to end the game.
 
In game two the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Baer doubled to lead off the game and scored on a single by Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). Pientack then doubled putting runners at second and third. Fredell the singled home two runs for a 3-0 lead.
 
IUP came back with a big second inning scoring nine times. The Huskies got a run back in the third when Fredell singled and scored on a double by Belko. The Crimson Hawks though scored three times in the bottom of the third and closed out the game by blanking the Huskies in the fourth and fifth innings.
 
Bloomsburg goes to 27-9, 9-3 in the PSAC Central. The Huskies host Molloy College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
