BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games with Molloy College on Saturday winning the opener 2-0 and dropping the nightcap 7-5 in eight innings.
In game one
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) threw a three-hit shutout to get the win. The Huskies got the only run it would need in the first inning when
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) doubled, moved to third on a bunt by
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) and scored on a double by
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View).
The game stayed 1-0 till the bottom of the fifth when Baer walked, went to second on another sacrifice by Yanora and later scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a grounder hit by
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley).
Paine was in control throughout the game and did not allow a hit till the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh inning Molloy got back to back hits putting runners at second and third with two outs, but Paine got a ground out to end the game.
Paine finished with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two the Huskies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Fredell and
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) getting RBI hits. Molloy tied the score in the top of the second, then went ahead with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Bloomsburg rallied and cut the lead down to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Fredell walked to lead off the inning with a walk and scored on a two-homer to right field by Belko, her ninth of the season.
The Huskies tied the score in the bottom of the fifth Fredell doubled home Baer who had led off the inning with a single. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Huskies had a chance to win the game getting a runner to third with one out, but Molloy's pitcher Megan Butterworth retired the side without allowing a run.
In the top of the eighth Molloy plated two runs to go on top 7-5. The Huskies did get a one out walk to
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge), but Butterworth again retired the side without any runs being allowed.
Belko finished 2-3 with three RBI, while Fredell was 2-3 with two RBI.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday at noon hosting Holy Family.
