BLOOMSBURG—
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View)'s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Holy Family University on Sunday afternoon and a sweep of a doubleheader. In the opener the Huskies took advantage of five errors by the Tigers to post a 7-1 win.
Before the game the Huskies honored the two senior members of its team,
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) and
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View). The Huskies were also playing their annual Strike Out Cancer game to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.
In game two of the doubleheader the Huskies and Tigers were locked in a 0-0 battle through the first five innings. Bloomsburg pitcher
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) had kept the Tigers off the board working out of second and third, one-out, jam in the fourth.
Holy Family finally reached Black in the sixth getting the inning started when Sammi Borrelli reached on an error. After a pop out, a single to right put runners on a second and third. Erin Corrado then singled home Borrelli to make it 1-0. Black then got a short fly out to center and a strikeout to keep it a 1-0 game.
In the bottom of the seventh
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) led off with a single to center.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then hit a hard liner down the right field line that skipped past the right fielder and to the fence. Kuhns easily scored the tying run with Baer getting a triple. After
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) was out on batters interference,
Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) then delivered a clean single up the middle scoring Baer with the game-winning run.
Black finished with a six-hitter and fanned six and did not issue a walk.
In the opener the Huskies scored three times in the second taking advantage of two errors.
Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) walked and scored on a double by
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ).
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with Moir scoring the second run and Black getting to second. Kuhns then reached on an error by the first baseman with Black scoring the third run.
Hioly Family got a run back in the top of the sixth before the Huskies got some insurance runs. With one out Moir reached on an error followed by Black singling to left. Kuhns then reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. Baer then hit a fly ball to right that was dropped by the right fielder with one run scoring.
Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) then reached on a fielder's choice with Black scoring to make it 5-1. After a strikeout,
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) then singled home two runs to make it 7-1.
Huskies pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) then closed out the win getting the final two outs by strikeout. She finished with 11 strikeouts, while allowing just three hits and one unearned run.
Bloomsburg improves to 30-10 and will face Lock Haven on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in a PSAC Central Division matchup.
