Paine Ties School Strikeout Record as Huskies Sweep Indiana Pa.

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team posted shutout wins against the Crimson Hawks of Indiana Pa. this afternoon in a PSAC Central doubleheader.  Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) tied a Bloomsburg and PSAC record with 18 strikeouts in a 5-0 win in game one while Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) drove home three runs in Bloomsburg's 8-0 win in game two.

Paine's 18 strikeouts tied the Bloomsburg school record for single game strikeouts which was set twice in 1995; once by April Paoli and once by Tina Souders.  Ironically enough the 18 strikeouts by Paoli also came against the Crimson Hawks.

Along with tying the Bloomsburg school record, Paine's 18 strikeouts ties the PSAC record as well.  Before Paine, the 18-K mark had only been met three times in PSAC history – once each by Bloomsburg's Paoli and Souders and most recently in 2008 by Indiana's Erin Holloway.

GAME ONE
Bloomsburg scored two runs in the first inning as Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) drove in one and scored the other to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.  The Huskies scored three more runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.  A big hit in the inning was Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge)'s triple that brought in a run and allowed her to score on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley)

Despite scoring five runs in two innings, the story of the day was the effort in the circle of Bloomsburg's Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon).  The junior lefty fanned 18 batters and allowed just three hits and two walks as she earned her 12th win of the season.

Paine only found herself in trouble two times in today's game, working out both jams with multiple strikeouts.  In the third inning she had runners on second and third before getting Indiana's Jasa Mitchell to go do down on strikes.  In the fourth inning the first two batters reach second and third but Paine would mow down the next three batters to keep the Crimson Hawks scoreless.

Offensively for the Huskies, Pientack went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Belko and Fredell both drove in runs.

GAME TWO
Building off of game one's momentum, the Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Both runs were scored on sacrifice flies by Bloomsburg's Belko and Fredell.

Bloomsburg picked up another two runs in the third inning on a towering two-run shot by Belko.  It was her seventh homer of the season which put the Huskies ahead 4-0.

After a scoreless inning in the fourth, Bloomsburg came up with timely hits to bring in three runs with two outs in the fifth.  Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley), Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ), and Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) all had an RBI in the inning.  Bloomsburg would eventually score their eighth and final run in the bottom of the sixth on consecutive errors by Indiana for Bloomsburg's 21st win of the season.

Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) improved to 5-3 on the season as the worked a two hit shutout.  Black fanned five batters, three coming in the fourth as she struck out the side.

At the plate Belko led the way by going 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while leadoff batter Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) also scored two runs.

Bloomsburg will be back in action on Friday, April 6th as the Huskies travel to take on Lock Haven in a PSAC Central double-header at 2:30 p.m.
