Huskies Split in Softball With Lock Haven on Friday

LOCK HAVEN—Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) went 2-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a 9-5 win and a split of its doubleheader with Lock Haven on Friday afternoon. The Huskies dropped the opener 8-0 in five innings in a showdown between the top two teams in the PSAC Central Division.
 
In game two the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) singled home Erik Yanora who led off the game with a single, to make it 1-0. Later in the inning Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) singled home Belko and Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) for a 3-0 lead. Lock Haven chipped away at the lead scoring single runs in the first and third innings to make it a 3-2 game.
 
In the top of the sixth the Huskies broke the game open scoring four runs. Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) reached on a passed ball strike-out and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a Belko single put runners at second and third, Pientack hit a three-run homer to make it 6-2. Moir and Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) then hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 7-2 game.
 
Bloomsburg starter Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area), who has allowed just one run through five innings, gave up two runs in the sixth before being Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) came in to relieve. Paine got out of the sixth without allowing any more runs making it a 7-4 game.
 
The Huskies added some insurance in the top of the seventh with Pientack driving in one run and the other scoring on a passed ball. Lock Haven got on back in the seventh, but the Huskies hung on for the 9-5 win.
 
In game one, the Huskies managed just one hit against Lock Haven's Sarah Morse and lost 8-0 in five innings.
 
The split leaves the Huskies with a record of 22-8, 4-2 in the PSAC Central (tied with Lock Haven for the top spot). Bloomsburg hosts Clarion on Saturday on 1 p.m. in another PSAC Central Division battle.
