Softball Team Sweeps Clarion on Saturday

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a doubleheader from Clarion University on Saturday winning by scores of 8-0 in six innings and 6-1 on a very windy day at Hutchinson Field. Any fly ball to the outfield and pop ups in the infield became adventure for both teams.

In the opener the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on single by Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge). Bloomsburg made it 3-0 in the fourth when Belko and Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View) singled to lead off the inning. Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) then reached on a fielder's choice with Belko out at third on the play. Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) then doubled home Pientack and Leach.

The Huskies won the game in the sixth by scoring five times to put the mercy rule into effect. Bloomsburg took advantage of two errors and a wild pitch to score its five runs. O'Connor had an RBI double and Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) had the game-clinching hit, a triple, to make it an 8-0 game.

Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) pitched a four-hit shutout to earn the win. She fanned nine and walked just one in the game.

In game two the Huskies again took the early lead scoring a run in the second. Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley), who led off the inning by reaching on an error, later scored on a hit by Yanora.

Clarion tied the score with a run in the third and it stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Pientack led off the inning with a triple and scored when Leach tripled down the right field line. O'Connor then singled home Leach for a 3-1 lead. Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) then followed with the Huskies third triple of the inning scoring O'Connor and making it 4-1. McHale would make it 5-1 when she scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning Yanora reached on an error and would later score on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead.

Paine went the final four innings to earn the win for Bloomsburg and retired the final seven batters of the game.

For the doubleheader O'Connor went a combined  4-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Yanora was 3-6  with runs scored.

Bloomsburg is now 24-8, 6-2 in the PSAC Central, and will be home with Mansfield on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
