BLOOMSBURG—The second-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team opened its 2012 season with a 3-1 win over Adelphia University on Thursday at Sports Stadium. The win was the 10
th straight year the Huskies have opened the season with a win.
The first half was scoreless despite the Huskies peppering the Panthers goalie Kristine Puzio with 22 shots on goal. However the Huskies could not punch one through in the opening 35 minutes.
In the second half the Huskies continued pressuring Adelphi's defense with
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) finally scoring in the 45
th minute. Simonovich scored on a scramble in front of the goal as the ball was being played off a penalty corner.
Bloomsburg continued to dominate offensively and just six minutes later made it a 2-1 game on a goal by
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) off an assist from
Felicia Domenici (Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley).
Adelphi trimmed the Huskies lead back to one in the 60th minute when Cassie Cabral scored off a Molly Cuevas assist.
The Huskies though came right back just three minutes later when
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) scored unassisted to make the final 3-1.
Overall the Huskies controlled the action getting 37 shots on goal to just four for Adelphi. Bloomsburg goalie
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) won in her first career start getting two saves.
Bloomsburg, 1-0, hits the road this week for back to back games in New England. The Huskies face Stonehill on Saturday and St. Anselm on Sunday.
