Bloomsburg Takes Down Stonehill in Season Opener, 44-28

Box Score EASTON, MA. – The 25th-ranked Bloomsburg University football team used multiple offensive threats and forced seven turnovers to help it post a 44-28 victory over Stonehill College Friday night at a sold-out W.B. Mason Stadium in the season opener.

Junior running back Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) rushed for a game-high 218 yards on 27 carries to lead the Huskies (1-0).  In doing so, he moved into fourth-place on the BU all-time rushing list with 3,425.  His 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put him over the mark.

Fellow junior running back Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) also eclipsed the triple-digit mark on the ground with 114 yards on 14 carries and a pair of scores.

Overall, the Huskies dominated the rushing game, 369-33.

Redshirt-freshman quarterback Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) played his first collegiate game Friday night and was able to control the game for the Huskies.  He was 16-for-26 through the air for 197 yards and a touchdown in his debut.

BU had five interceptions on the night.  DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) took an interception 28 yards for a touchdown, as seniors Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton), Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional), Dan Haverstock (York/West York), and junior Jonathan Patrick (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) also picked off the Stonehill quarterback.

Haverstock led the Huskies with eight tackles, followed by Robinson with seven, Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) with five, and Shawn Mitchell (Nazareth/Nazareth) with four.

The game started with Stonehill's Kevin Anderson taking the opening kickoff and returning it 92 yards for a touchdown and quickly putting the Skyhawks up 7-0.

Bloomsburg came back and scored on its second possession of the season, marching 61 yards in 10 plays with Dan Fisher connecting on a 27-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 7:48 to go.

On Stonehill's next possession, quarterback Logan Meyer fumbled with the Huskies Tony David (Allentown/Salisbury) recovering at the Skyhawk 35-yard line. From there Bloomsburg needed just five plays capped off by a seven-yard run from Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) to put the Huskies on top 10-7.

The Bloomsburg defense played another key role in the Huskies next score. In his first game with the football team after a stellar four-year career for Bloomsburg in basketball, Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) made his presence known when he intercepted a Meyer pass at the Stonehill 46-yard line. On the Huskies next play, Kelly connected on his first career TD pass after he aired one out to Matt Marchioni (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) for a 46-yard score making it 17-7 late in the first quarter.

The Huskies defense took care of the next score themselves when Robinson intercepted Meyer and returned the ball 28 yards for a touchdown, putting Bloomsburg on top 24-7.

The defense then forced a three and out on Stonehill with the punt pushing the Huskies back to their 22-yard line. Six plays later Mateo scored his second touchdown of the game, this one on a 47-yard run sending the Huskies to the locker room with a 31-7 lead.

Stonehill came out to start the second half and forced the Huskies to punt. Meyer then directed a three play, 75-yard drive with Gordon McLeod catching a 32-yard touchdown.

Bloomsburg answered when Quiteh broke free for a 60-yard scoring run to put the Huskies back up 38-14. But the Skyhawks answered with touchdowns on back-to-back drives narrowing the gap to 38-28 with 10:38 to play.

But, the Huskies turned to the ground game to eat up nearly five minutes of clock before getting a 38-yard field goal from Fisher to make it 41-28. Fisher added a third field goal with 3:33 to go after Pidgeon intercepted Meyer at the Huskies 43-yard line.

Bloomsburg, 1-0, will host Edinboro on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. There will be free admission to the game for all fans. It will be part of the Huskies One Town, One Team: Flood Recovery Recognition Day.
