Offensive Outburst Seals 3-0 Bloomsburg Shutout over Chestnut Hill

Jessy Shober celebrating her first career goal in her third season with Bloomsburg.
Box Score
BLOOMSBURG – There was no shortage of scoring for the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team Monday night.  It scored three goals under the lights and was able to keep the ball in Chestnut Hill territory for most of the game on its way to a 3-0 victory at Sports Stadium.

The Huskies (2-2) seemed to put together its finest match of the season against the Griffins (1-3).  Not only did they triple their season scoring total, the defensive back line and sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Fiorelli (Warrington/Villa Joseph Marie) stuck together and didn't give the Chestnut Hill attackers any breathing room.

“We did a great job tonight of playing possession and keeping the ball under control,” head coach Stephanie Anderson said.  “We showed a lot of promise in our last game and I felt confident playing everyone on our team tonight.  To come out and not have a drop off from our starters to non-starters and finish with a shutout, it's probably our best performance to date.”

Jessy Shober (Marietta/Donegal) experienced a moment she will never forget in the opening half.  In the 26th minute, the junior defender saw an opening in the Griffin defense and lofted a shot from 30 yards out that found its way into the top right corner of the net to give Bloomsburg the lead.

The Huskies found a window of opportunity early in the second half that they were able to take advantage of.  Tara Huber (Orefield/Parkland) gave Bloomsburg some insurance in the 53rd minute with her team-leading second goal of the season.  Senior midfielder Lauren Stedman (Garnet Valley/Garnet Valley) set up Huber with a short pass inside the box for her first assist of the season.

It took just over a minute after Huber's goal for the Huskies to take back control of the ball and push forward.  In the 54th minute, one minute seven seconds after BU's second goal of the night, freshman Taylor Gerstenfield (Warminster/William Tennent) made a one-time shot off a Huber pass into the right side of the net to give the Huskies a comfortable lead.

“We were happy to have the lead at halftime, but I was pleased to see us stay aggressive in the second half,” Anderson said.  “We wanted to have some success playing the way we have been practicing, and it really helps our team to have some confidence heading into a big weekend.”

The shutout was Fiorelli's second of the season for Bloomsburg.  The sophomore has started in net in each of BU's four games this season.  She tallied one save on the night and despite entering the season with just one game played, Fiorelli has proven she has what it takes to keep the Huskies in contention.

“Danielle has been great for us,” Anderson said.  “She's very good at communicating to the entire team and keeping us organized.  Our back line has really helped her out by not allowing easy looks for the other team, but Danielle has come up with big saves when we needed her to.”

Bloomsburg stayed aggressive throughout and outshot Chestnut Hill, 24-3.  Huber had a game-high seven shots on the night, five of which were on target.  Kyleigh Reckage (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) and Sierra Fortunato (Kennett Square/Unionville) were both active in the midfield and had three shots each.

A key piece to the Husky puzzle Monday night was the experienced line on defense.  Senior Caitlin Raynes (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen), and juniors Lauren Kreglow (Whitehall/Allentown Central Catholic) and Kelsey Holtz (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Borough) have started every game for Bloomsburg in the early going.  They defused every Chestnut Hill attack and weren't afraid to carry the ball forward to give the Huskies an extra attacker.  That aggressiveness and poise from the defense will certainly be depended on heading forward.

Bloomsburg moves back into conference-play this weekend with a pair of home matchups.  It hosts Gannon on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., and Mercyhurst on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Sports Stadium.
