BLOOMSBURG—The second-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team lost to third-ranked West Chester by a score of 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
Early on the game was a back and forth affair with shots by both teams going wide. The Huskies were finally able to get a good push up the field with less than five minutes to play in the half resulting in the first goal.
In the series a shot attempt by the Huskies was knocked away from the goal cage where
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) came in from the right side and poked it past West Chester goalie Kristin Arnold putting Bloomsburg on top 1-0 at the 30:34 mark. Overall, for the first 35 minutes, the Golden Rams held a 4-2 edge in corners with Bloomsburg holding an 8-5 edge in shots.
West Chester tied the score early in the second half in a man-advantage situation. After the Huskies
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) was given a yellow card, West Chester got a turnaround near midfield with a quick run to the circle. Michele Schrift then fed Kayla Gluchowski for the game-tying score with 33 minutes left in the game.
The Golden Rams took the lead for good in the 50
th minute on a scramble in the circle. Stef Pirri took a shot that was saved by Bloomsburg's
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill). The ball then bounced over to Gluchowski who passed to Megan Callanan who scored on the play.
Bloomsburg had back-to-back opportunities on penalty corners with just over five minutes to play, but came up empty each time. The Huskies had one more shot on goal, but
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood)'s attempt was saved by Arnold preserving the West Chester lead.
West Chester improves to 2-1, 1-0 in the PSAC East, while Bloomsburg falls to 4-1, 0-1 in the PSAC East.
The Huskies host Slippery Rock on Friday at 2 p.m.
