BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University football team has conquered each of its four opponents this season and hasn't shown signs of slowing down. It takes a break from conference-play this weekend to host Gannon University on Saturday, Sept. 29 for its annual 'Think Pink' game. Kickoff at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.
The Think Pink campaign is designed to help raise breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to show support by wearing pink to the game.
The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Jim Doyle and Andy Ulicny calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to and watch the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 30 minutes before kickoff.
The Huskies (4-0 overall, 2-0 PSAC East) are coming off a 42-27 victory over LIU Post in which it overcame a 24-21 fourth quarter deficit with 21 unanswered points. The win propelled Bloomsburg to tenth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top 25 poll and 12th in the weekly D2football.com national poll.
This is the third meeting between Bloomsburg and Gannon (1-3, 0-2 PSAC West). They split the previous two games in 2008 and 2009 with Gannon holding the most recent advantage. The Golden Knights kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime in the 2009 season-finale to top the Huskies, 10-7. It was the last time Bloomsburg did not score at least 14 points in a game.
Bloomsburg has had no issue scoring points through its first four games this season. It has scored more than 30 points in every game and is averaging 40 per game, good for third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Senior wide receiver
Kyle Fisher (Denver/Cocalico) is coming off the best scoring performance of his career. This week's PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week turned in a career-high 196 receiving yards and three touchdowns against LIU Post. His stat-line was something that hadn't been seen in a while for the Huskies. It was the first 100+ yard receiving game for Bloomsburg since midway through the 2011 season, and the first three TD game for a receiver since 2003.
In the running game, juniors
Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) and
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) have continued their strong presence as two of the top backs in the nation. Bloomsburg is third in Division II in rushing at 324 yards per game and has rushed for 300 yards in all but one game this season (299 against LIU Post).
Bloomsburg's top dog has been Quiteh, the nation's fifth-leading rusher. He is averaging 156.3 yards on the ground and can become the programs' third 4,000-yard rusher with 168 on Saturday.
Mateo is averaging 116.3 rushing yards this season as both backs are coming off 100-yard performances against LIU Post (Quiteh – 121; Mateo – 118). It was the seventh time in their career's that they each rushed for triple-digits in the same game.
Quarterback
Tim Kelly (Camp Hill/Cedar Cliff) has turned in back-to-back 240-yard passing performances and has shown improvements every game. He's thrown for 774 yards and seven touchdowns this season and held a streak of 75 consecutive passes without an interception earlier this season.
Defensively, the 27 points allowed to LIU Post was the second-lowest of the season for the Huskies. Its strongest asset thus far has been stopping the run. Bloomsburg has not allowed a rush of over 24 yards this season and is fifth in the PSAC in rushing yards allowed per game (102.5).
Senior defensive end
Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) has had a sack in every game and leads the PSAC with five. His 6-7 frame has proven to cause problems and frustration to opposing quarterbacks which makes the Huskies defensive core much more dangerous.
Fellow senior
Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) leads the team and is 12th in the conference in total tackles with 33. He's led BU in tackles twice this season including two double-digit outings. His season-best was 13 against Kutztown.
Gannon was unable to overcome Clarion and a treacherous rainstorm last week in a 13-7 setback. It has dropped three straight games since winning its season-opener against Lake Erie, 36-33.
The Golden Knight offense has been driven by its passing attack. Quarterback Liam Nadler is one of three PSAC quarterbacks to throw for 1,000 yards this season. He's racked up 1,091 yards with seven touchdowns, but has also thrown seven passes to opposing defenses.
Wide receivers Abraham Ocasio and Justin Caliste have been Nadler's top targets through the early going. They have each brought in at least 300 yards with Ocasio leading the way with 391 and four scores.
Defensively, Khayree Connors has a team-high 34 tackles with a pair of forced fumbles. Will Giles has two interceptions on the year with 5.5 tackles for a loss.
Bloomsburg and Gannon return to divisional-play next week. The Huskies travel to Millersville on Saturday, Oct. 6 for an early 12:30 kickoff, and Gannon heads up to Edinboro on Oct. 6 beginning at 2 p.m.
