Box Score
BLOOMSBURG—
Fran Miller (Doylestown/Central Bucks East)'s first half penalty kick lifted the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team past Pitt Johnstown Friday evening by a score of 1-0 at Sports Stadium in Bloomsburg's home-opening match.
Miller scored on an opportune penalty kick in the 26th minute. The penalty kick was set up by a red carded handball by a UPJ defender in the box. Miller capitalized on the shot, kicking the ball to the top left corner of the net, out of goalkeeper Nolan Levine's reach. Miller ended the game with three shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Ramon Lobo Jr. (Dillsburg/Northern) earned his first career shutout in his first start of the 2012 season for the Huskies (2-1 overall). Friday's contest was controlled by the confidence and skill of Lobo Jr. In his first start of the season, the junior made three defining saves and controlled action inside of the box. Lobo gained poise by running out of goal fearlessly to block shots and passes made by the Mountain Cats (0-3).
As a team, Bloomsburg outshot Pitt Johnstown, 25-7. It was able to keep the ball in opposing territory for most of the game, which resulted in a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) was often targeted in the Husky attack. The senior forward's first half shot nearly found the back of the net, but clanged off the right post. He took nine shots, four of which were on goal for the Huskies.
The Huskies defense did not allow the Mountain Cats to have many shots. However, midfielder Matthew Kinney turned the last 10 seconds into a nail biter with a shot on goal, only to be saved by Lobo Jr.
Tim Ofman started in goal for UPJ and made four saves while allowing the only goal of the match. Eddie Stover took over in the second half and made seven saves for the Mountain Cats.
The Huskies are home Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Shepherd University at Sports Stadium.
