BLOOMSBURG—On the strength of 17 three-pointers the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team knocked off Clarion University 79-53 victory Saturday evening in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) crossover game at the Nelson Field House.
The teams traded leads in the opening six of minutes of action before back-to-back three-pointers from
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) and
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) gave the Huskies a 15-10 edge with 12:47 left in the half.
Later, with five minutes to play in the first half, the Huskies were holding a six-point lead, 27-21, over the Golden Eagles. But back-to-back three-pointers by Wieller sparked a 14-4 run for the Huskies to close the first half putting Bloomsburg on top 41-25 at the break.
The Huskies continued their domination in the second half using a 15-4 run in the opening five minutes of play to make it 56-29 and put the game out of reach.
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) scored the Huskies first six points of the half before
Maggie Borski (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy),
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley), and Wieller hit three-pointers on three straight possessions to blow the game open.
Bloomsburg later grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 64-35, on a three-pointer from Wieller with 11:58 to play. After Clarion narrowed the score to 68-51, the Huskies held the Golden Eagles to just two points in the final 5:21 to post the 26-point victory.
The 17 made three-pointers by the Huskies were one shy of the school record and came on 32 attempts (53.1 percent).
Bloomsburg, ranked 25th in Division II, had four players make it into the double-digit column. Wieller scored a game-high 22 points hitting six three-pointers along the way, while Noack, who had three triples of her own, added 12 points with
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) getting 11 points and 10 rebounds. Also,
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) contributed 11 points off the bench.
For the Golden Eagles, now 7-8, 3-6 in the PSAC, Hannah Heeter led the way putting up 14 points and getting 10 rebounds, while Tania Holmes added 11 points.
Bloomsburg, 10-3, 6-3 in the PSAC, will open PSAC East play on Wednesday hosting Shippensburg University at 5:30 p.m.
