25th-Ranked Huskies Look for Fantastic Fourth Wednesday against Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG – Coming off its best three-point shooting display of the season, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team showed that it can be one of the most dangerous teams in the conference.  It will look to keep the momentum rolling with its fourth consecutive win as it hosts Shippensburg University on Wednesday, Jan. 16 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.

Bloomsburg (10-3, 6-3 PSAC) is ranked 25th in the USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll.  It has been ranked in the top 25 in each poll since the second week of the regular season.

The Huskies enter Eastern Division play tied for first place in the division with Millersville after being picked first in the PSAC Preseason poll.  Shippensburg (9-5, 5-4) is tied for third with West Chester and Kutztown as the Raiders were picked fourth in the preseason poll.

Bloomsburg has won three in a row and is coming off a pair of games in which it held its opponents to 53 points.  Shippensburg holds the all-time series lead against Bloomsburg, 29-20, but the Huskies have won the previous four matchups.  The teams met three times last season including a PSAC Quarterfinal game at Nelson Field House. The Raiders last won at Nelson in the first matchup of the 2010-11 season, 69-66.  However, Bloomsburg responded to the loss with a 12-game winning streak.

Playing at home has played a significant advantage for the Huskies over the last three seasons.  Bloomsburg currently holds a 17-game winning streak at home and since the 2010-11 season, it holds an impressive 30-5 record on its home floor.

Bloomsburg made a season-high 17 three-pointers in its win over Clarion on Saturday.  It was one shy of tying the school-record as it converted on 53.1 percent of its shots from downtown.  It has made 11 or more three-pointers in three of its last four games.

Senior guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) played a significant role in the successful long range shooting as she tied her season-high of six made three-pointers.  For the season, Wieller is second in the PSAC at 15.2 points per game, and her .391 three-point percentage rates second in the conference.  She has also made a three-pointer in 17 consecutive games.

Wieller ranks fifth in BU history with 1,656 career points.  She needs five to move into fourth and tie Michelle Simons.

With a start, senior guard Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) will start in and play in her 100th career game.  Fellow seniors Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) and Wieller have played in 98 games, and senior forward Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) has played in 97 games in their four-year careers.

Oxenrider (11.4) and Ellis (11.0) also average in double figures for the Huskies. Oxenrider is tied for the PSAC lead in free throw percentage at 87.5, and Ellis is 10th in rebounding at 7.6.

Bloomsburg leads the PSAC in scoring at 75.8 points per game, and is on pace to break the school-record of 73.4 set last season. It also leads the PSAC and is 10th in Division II with 17.92 assists per game. BU is assisting on 67.73 percent of its total field goals as it has had 10 or more assists in 44 of its last 45 games.

The Raiders are coming off an 82-50 victory over California (PA) on Saturday.  Dana Wert and Shawna Wert each scored 17 points and were perfect at the free throw line.  For her effort last week, Dana Wert was named this week's PSAC East Athlete of the Week.

The twin sisters were two of five Raiders to score in double figures.  For the season, Sarah Strybuc leads the team in scoring at 14.4 and is shooting 85.7 percent at the free throw line.  Stephanie Knauer is second on the team at 13.4 ppg and 9.6 rebounds per game, followed by Shawna Wert (12.3) and Dana Wert (11.9).

Following its game against Shippensburg, Bloomsburg hits the road for two straight games.  It takes on Cheyney University on Saturday, Jan. 19 for a PSAC East matchup beginning at 1 p.m.
