MANSFIELD – The 21st-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team opened up a double-digit lead at the end of the first half and never looked back, as it took down Mansfield University 93-73 Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at Decker Gymnasium.
The Huskies (13-3, 9-3 PSAC) have now won six in a row and maintain their lead atop the Eastern Division. Senior guard
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) entered the game as the second-leading scorer in the conference, and dropped a game-high 22 points against the Mounties (4-12, 2-10).
Wieller made four three-pointers and shot 9-for-21 from the field, the most shots for the senior in a game this season and tied for the third-most in her career. Wieller also grabbed three rebounds, had two steals, and two assists.
Leading 41-37 with 3:27 to play in the first half, the Huskies went on a 14-3 run to take a 55-40 lead into the locker room.
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) scored seven points and
Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) scored five in the run to give Bloomsburg great momentum.
Bloomsburg shot 59.5 percent in the first half and made seven three-pointers.
BU's 55 first half points marked the second time this season BU scored 50 or more in the opening 20 minutes (50 vs. Wilmington). The 55 were the most in a half since it scored 56 in the second half at Millersville last season, and the most in the first half since scoring 57 against Penn State Schuylkill in the 2009-10 season.
The hot shooting didn't let up in the second half for Bloomsburg. For the game, the Huskies shot 54.5 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range, both of which were the second highest of the season.
Five Huskies scored in double figures. Along with Wieller, Ellis (15),
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) (13),
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) (11), and Ford (10) all shot over 50 percent from the field while scoring in double figures.
Ellis shot 7-for-10 and grabbed five rebounds with a pair of steals. Bloomsburg's leading rebounder was senior point guard
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) who led the game with seven rebounds and seven assists.
As a team, Bloomsburg out-rebounded Mansfield 37-27.
Oxenrider was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and Noack grabbed four steals as the Huskies have now won eight in a row against the Mounties.
Both teams shot effective from the field to start the game. With Bloomsburg leading 17-12 at the 14:46 mark of the first half, Bloomsburg went on a 9-2 run over just one minute, 42 seconds to take its first double-digit lead of the game at 26-14.
BU had just one turnover in the first 10 minutes of the game, but turnovers prevented the Huskies from stretching their lead any further. The Mounties went on a 13-3 run of their own to cut the Huskies lead to two at 29-27 with 7:30 left in the first half. Bloomsburg had three turnovers in the Mansfield run.
The run of the game occurred at the end of the first half, which allowed Bloomsburg to open up its largest lead of the game. The 14-3 run to give Bloomsburg a 15-point advantage proved to be too much for Mansfield to overcome.
In the second half, Ford gave Bloomsburg a 20-point lead at 75-55 off a pair of free throws with 11:04 to play. Bloomsburg held its largest lead of the game at 26, 89-63, with 3:48 to play.
Ellis played in her 100th career game Wednesday night and joins fellow seniors Oxenrider, Wieller, and Flanagan to play in 100 career games.
Bloomsburg's 93 points were the most against a PSAC opponent since it scored 99 against East Stroudsburg at home in the 2010-11 season.
Mansfield had four players in double figures led by Jena Matter's 15, nine of which came at the free throw line. Shaleta Heyward scored 14 points and had a team-high six rebounds, Kayla Espigh scored 12 points including three three-pointers, and Katie Fitzpatrick scored 11 points with four rebounds.
The Huskies look to extend their winning streak to seven on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they host West Chester University (9-7, 6-6) at Nelson Field House beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will mark Bloomsburg's 'Play 4 Kay' game to raise awareness of breast cancer.
