Women’s Basketball Aims to Continue Home Court Success Saturday against West Chester

BLOOMSBURG – The 21st-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team has been on a roll as of late, winning six in a row.  The Huskies return to Nelson Field House on Saturday, Jan. 26 in hopes of their seventh consecutive victory when they host West Chester University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.  Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.

Saturday will also mark Bloomsburg's 'Play 4 Kay' game to raise awareness of and promote breast cancer research.  Everyone is encouraged to wear pink to the event.  Read more about the 'Play 4 Kay' event by clicking here.

The Huskies (13-3, 9-3 PSAC) have been dominant during their season-best winning streak.  They're coming off a 93-73 win over Mansfield on Wednesday, the second highest scoring total of the season (96 vs. Wilmington).  Even more impressive, each of the six victories have been by 20 points or more including a five-game span of holding their opponent under 55 points.

Looking to Saturday's matchup with the Golden Rams (9-7, 6-6), the teams split the series last season with each team winning on its home floor.  The last time BU played WCU, Bloomsburg guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a career-high 32 points with a school-record eight three-pointers. Bloomsburg has not lost to West Chester at Nelson Field House since the 2007-08 season.

Bloomsburg has even more reason to feel confident playing on its home floor.  It currently holds an 18-game winning streak at Nelson Field House and since the 2010-11 season, Bloomsburg holds an impressive 31-5 record on its home floor.

Wieller is part of a senior class that has experienced tremendous success on the court. With fellow senior Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) playing in her 100th career game Wednesday, all four seniors have played in 100 games in their careers. They are the second group of four players in Bloomsburg history to play in 100 games.  From 1995-99, Holly Curnow, Christie Berry, Michele Ruzicka, and Erin Beggs all played in 100 games.

Last time BU played WCU, Wieller had a record-breaking performance.  On Saturday, she can continue her charge through the BU record books.  Wieller currently ranks fourth in BU history with 1,706 career points and needs eight to move into third and tie Kelsey  Gallagher.

This season, Wieller is second in the PSAC in scoring (15.5), three-point percentage (.378), and free throw percentage (.870).  She has also made a three-pointer in 20 straight games.

The senior has played a significant role in helping Bloomsburg lead the PSAC in scoring at 76.8 points per game. It's on pace to break the school-record of 73.4 set last season.

Ellis has a team-high four double-double's this season.  She is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 while grabbing a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game.

Fellow senior Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scores 11.1 points per game and is shooting 84.4 percent from the free throw line.  As a team, Bloomsburg leads the PSAC in free throw shooting at 75.6 percent.

Turnovers and red-hot outside shooting led Shippensburg to a 75-55 victory over visiting West Chester Wednesday night. Paige Elliott led the Golden Rams with 11 points on the night. It was her second straight game in double figures. Meghan Kerrigan led West Chester with seven points at halftime while Alexandra Lennon blocked three shots in the first 20 minutes.

For the season, Lennon leads the team at 10.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.  Also averaging double figures for West Chester is Brittany Sicinski at 10.5 per clip.

After its game against West Chester, Bloomsburg remains in divisional play and hosts East Stroudsburg Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at Nelson Field House.
