Women's Basketball Team Falls to West Chester

BLOOMSBURG—The 21st-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team lost to West Chester University, 65-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.
 
West Chester jumped out an early 7-2 lead in the game before the Huskies rallied to tie the score at 7-7 on a three-pointer and two free throws from Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty). The Golden Rams regained the lead on a three-pointer by Dallas Ely which was the start of a 15-5 run putting them in front by 10 points, 22-12, with 9:32 to play in the half.
 
Later with West Chester on top 30-25 at the 2:06 mark of the first half the Huskies got hot and closed out the period with a 10-2 run to lead by three at halftime. Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) started the rally with a three pointer followed by a pair of free throws from Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley). BU's Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) then drained a three-pointer and, after a West Chester turnover, Marla Simmons (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) finished the half with jumper giving the Huskies a three-point half time lead at 35-32.
 
The Golden Rams tied the score in the opening 30 seconds of the second half and the teams then traded leads for the next seven minutes along with two ties. West Chester hit back-to-back three-pointers to go back on top 48-42 with 10:38 to play. The Huskies rallied though and tied the score at 48-all on Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty)'s layup then regained the lead at 51-50 on a free throw from Maggie Borski (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) with 5:32 to play in the game. Bloomsburg went up by three on a layup from Ford with 4:29 to go before the Golden Rams went on a 7-0 run to take a 57-53 lead with 3:23 to left.
 
The Huskies closed to within a bucket with 3:02 left when Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) hit a jumper from the baseline, but a conventional three-point play from WCU's Alex Lennon stretched the lead back to 60-55 with 2:38 to play.
 
A jumper from Ellis and a layup from Noack off a steal by Oxenrider made it a 60-59 game with 1:54 to play. Lennon though hit a pair of free throws with 1:37 to play for a 62-59 lead for West Chester. Bloomsburg came down and missed a three-pointer and later the front end of a one-and-one, while West Chester was able to rebound a couple of missed shots of its own, playing keeping away from the Huskies.

The Golden Rams added a three-point play from Jasmen Clark in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory.
 
Bloomsburg falls to 13-4, 9-4 in the PSAC and had its six-game winning streak snapped with the loss. The Huskies, who lost starting point guard Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) to an injury in the first half, were led in scoring by Noack with 12 and Ellis with 10.  
 
West Chester, 10-7, 7-6 in the PSAC, had five players in double figures led by Ely with 15, while Lennon and Meghan Kerrigan each scored 14 with Brittany Sicinski finishing with 11.
 
Bloomsburg is back at home on Wednesday hosting East Stroudsburg at 5:30 p.m.
