ERIE – Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) and
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) turned it on in the second half and helped the 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team overcome a 20-point first-half deficit against eighth-ranked Gannon University to hold a three-point lead with less than three minutes to play. However, Gannon ended the game on a 7-0 run to take down the Huskies, 72-68, in Friday night's nationally-ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at the Hammermill Center.
After trailing by 16 at halftime and as many as 20 at the 5:15 mark of the first half, the Huskies (7-3, 3-3 PSAC) used a 31-14 run to open the second half over 13 minutes to give Bloomsburg a 59-58 lead with 6:49 to play.
Noack scored a team- and season-high 20 points, 17 of which came in the second half. She tied her career-high with six three-pointers as the Huskies made a season-high 11 field goals from beyond the arc. The six three-pointers for Noack tied a previous career-best set in her first career game in 2010 against Penn State Schuylkill.
The junior played a significant role in Bloomsburg's second half run, as she accounted for BU's first 11, and 14 of the opening 16 points of the half. For the game, Noack also dished out three assists and had a pair of steals while shooting 7-for-10 from the floor.
Oxenrider dropped 18 points, 13 of which came in the second half. She made three three-pointers and responded well after suffering foul trouble in the first half. Including a string of seven straight points to get the Huskies within striking distance, the senior drained the three-pointer to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the second half.
The Golden Knights (12-1, 6-0) controlled the opening 20 minutes with efficient shooting and controlling the glass. Gannon shot 50 percent in the first half to Bloomsburg's 33.3, and out-rebounded the Huskies 22-17. Gannon led by as many as 20 points with 5:15 to play in the first half.
Noack hit back-to-back three-pointers on Bloomsburg's opening two possessions of the second half to cut the deficit to 10 at 44-34 just 45 seconds into the second half.
Later in the half,
Brianna Dudeck (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) made a fastbreak layup to cut the Gannon lead to six, and Oxenrider converted on a three-point play off an offensive rebound to bring the Huskies to within five, 54-49, with 12 minutes to play.
Oxenrider scored seven straight points for the Huskies as her three-pointer with 8:15 to play brought the Huskies to within four at 58-54. Oxenrider found fellow senior
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor), this week's PSAC East Athlete of the Week, underneath to keep the run going and put the Huskies down just two points. Oxenrider's three-pointer the following possession completed the comeback and gave Bloomsburg its first lead of the second half with 6:49 to play.
Bloomsburg led by as many as three in the final minutes. Gannon took a one-point lead at 69-68 with 1:14 to play off a pair of Nettie Blake free throws. Noack had her three-pointer blocked the next time down the floor, as Gannon used free throws to end the game on a 7-0 run and keep its perfect conference record alive.
Senior guard
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) rounded out the trio of double digit scorers for Bloomsburg with 12. She also grabbed a game-high four steals. Fellow senior
Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) returned to the starting lineup after missing two games with an injury and dished out a team-high five assists.
The Golden Knights bench outscored Bloomsburg's, 42-10. Mollie Sebald had 21 of the 42 as she shot 7-for-12 from the field including four three-pointers. Blake had 16 points off the bench including a 10-for-14 performance at the free throw line.
Gannon made 21 free throws, topping Bloomsburg's 9-for-9 outing at the charity stripe.
The Huskies look to get back in the win column Saturday night as they stay in the city of Erie to take on Mercyhurst University with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
