ERIE – The 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University women's basketball team used another strong second half to earn a 78-55 victory over Mercyhurst University Saturday evening in the final game of a season-long, six-game road trip in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Senior guard
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a game-high 20 points, 15 of which came in the second half, and drained a season-best six three-pointers in the victory. The scoring output tied a season-high for the senior as she also dished out three assists and had a pair of steals.
The Huskies (8-3, 4-3 PSAC) had four players score in double figures. Senior forward
Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) grabbed her third double-double of the season and second in the last three games. This week's PSAC East Athlete of the Week scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end of the floor. Ellis also had a career-high five blocks, topping her previous high of three set in BU's win over Philadelphia six days ago.
Junior
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) followed up her terrific play from a night ago with her second straight game scoring in double figures. She finished with 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half, on 5-for-9 shooting with a pair of three pointers.
Senior guard
Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers for the Huskies with 11 points to go along with a game-high four assists.
Bloomsburg took 15 more shots than Mercyhurst (3-9, 3-5) as it had five fewer turnovers than the Lakers (14-19) and grabbed six more rebounds (33-27).
Along with shooting 51 percent from the floor, the Huskies shot a season-high 46 percent from three-point range. They tied their season-high of 11 three-pointers made.
The Bloomsburg defense held the Lakers to 33 percent shooting from the field, tied for the second-lowest output by a Bloomsburg opponent this season. However, Mercyhurst attacked the basket and got to the free throw line 30 times. It shot 77 percent from the charity stripe (23-of-30).
After Mercyhurst made the opening basket, Bloomsburg went on a 16-4 run to take a 10-point lead just over five minutes into the game. With BU leading by 16 with 8:03 to play in the first half, the Lakers responded with a 12-0 run over six minutes to bring the game to 26-22. The Huskies held a five-point, 30-25 advantage at the break.
Wieller opened the second half scoring with three three-pointers to give Bloomsburg a 14-point lead just under five minutes into play at 41-27. The lead never dropped out of double figures the rest of the way as Bloomsburg ended the game on a 5-0 run to hold a game-high 23-point lead as the final buzzer sounded.
Dana Banda led the Lakers with 19 points including a 9-for-10 performance at the free throw line and two three-pointers. Adrienne Kloecker chipped in nine points and five rebounds as she played all 40 minutes.
Bloomsburg closed their six-game road trip with a 3-3 record and now return home for three straight games. It takes on Lock Haven and Clarion on Jan. 11-12 at the Nelson Field House in the final PSAC crossover weekend of the season. Tipoff for both games is set for 5:30 p.m.
