BLOOMSBURG – A strong effort from the Bloomsburg women's soccer team wasn't enough to upset No. 24 Slippery Rock as The Rock (7-2-1, 6-2-1 PSAC) came away with a 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
The Huskies (5-7-0, 3-7-0 PSAC) controlled much of the opening half, operating within The Rock zone, but it was the visitors who broke through for an early score. Following a Bloomsburg foul, The Rock took advantage of a free kick to set up the first goal of the game. Lauren Impey crossed to Crysta Ganter who headed in a shot past the Huskies keeper into the lower right portion of the net and a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
Bloomsburg outshot The Rock by a 6-3 margin during the first half including a pair of excellent scoring chances. First,
Stephanie Tuccio (Exton/Bishop Shanahan) broke free through the center of the box in the 21st minute but her shot finished wide of the net. The Huskies nearly evened the score in the 39th minute when
Sierra Fortunato (Kennett Square/Unionville) blasted a shot off the crossbar that nearly bounded into the net, but instead landed just in front where Rock keeper Dana O'Neill could clear.
Slippery Rock added an insurance goal in the 49th minute when Nicole Krueger received a crossing pass from Cailin Conner on the close left wing and finished an open look with the second goal of the contest.
The Rock held a 10-9 edge in shots and both teams earned two corner kicks during the match.
O'Neill earned the victory with five saves in net.
Danielle Fiorelli (Warrington/Villa Joseph Marie) had four saves for the Huskies.
