Huskies to Honor Decorated Senior Class Saturday against Kutztown

BLOOMSBURG – The senior class of the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team has not only left its mark on the program, it has helped build a tradition of winning and excellence over the last four years. Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area), Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor), Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley), and Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) will be honored for their careers at Bloomsburg before Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game against Kutztown University.  Tipoff at Nelson Field House is set for 12 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.

The Huskies (19-5, 15-5 PSAC) defeated the Golden Bears (14-10, 12-8) earlier this season, 79-68, and need another win Saturday to remain in first place in the East with Millersville.

In their time at Bloomsburg, this group has helped build the program into the perennial power it is today.  They have won back-to-back PSAC East Championships and last season, made the programs first trip in 11 years to the NCAA tournament.  They are the second group of four players in Bloomsburg history to all play in 100 games and have won 83 games in their careers for a winning percentage of 74.77 percent.

“It is hard to imagine that our freshmen are now seniors,” Bloomsburg head coach Bill Cleary said. “In four short years, they have transformed the program into a perennial power. Their constant hard work, dedication and commitment to the program has made the Bloomsburg University women's basketball program what it is today.”

“Our seniors are not just role models for their teammates, but to all young girls who want to strive to be the best,” Cleary continued. “They truly epitomize what it means to be a winner.”

Flanagan has been Bloomsburg's leader on the court the past four seasons. She has done things beyond the stat sheet to help the program and has started in all 109 games she has played in. She ranks second in school history with 470 career assists and is second in the PSAC this season with 81.

Flanagan has registered an assist in 21 straight games and for her career, she averages nearly five points per game.  She is a Freeland native from Hazleton Area High School and will graduate in May with a degree in Business Education.

“Flan's (Flanagan) leadership on and off the court has made us the program we are today,” Cleary said. “Her love of the game and love for her team is always evident when she plays. She is the consummate team player.”

Ellis has been a presence in the paint both offensively and defensively for the Huskies. She has seven career double-doubles including five this season.  She's coming off a career-best 14-rebound performance against Mansfield and is 10th in the PSAC in rebounding this season at 7.5 per game.

In her career, Ellis has 640 rebounds for 15th in Bloomsburg history.  She's averaging a career-high 10.6 points per game this season and scored a career-high 25 at Philadelphia. She is fifth in the PSAC in blocks this season with 37, and is fifth in Bloomsburg history with 105 career blocks. Ellis is also known for taking one charge in her career against Penn State. Ellis is a Bangor native from Bangor High School and will graduate in May with a degree in Exercise Science.

“Lauren is the most underrated, hardest worker in the league,” Cleary said. “She transformed herself into one of the best post players in the conference with all of her hard work and passion to be the best.”

Oxenrider has played the most games of any Bloomsburg senior with 110. She was named to the All-PSAC second team last season after averaging a career-high 12.2 points per game.  She is third on the team in scoring this season at 10.3 points per game and is 10th on the Bloomsburg all-time scoring list with 1,249 points. She is also fourth in Bloomsburg history in three-pointers with 161 and 12th in career assists with 241.

Oxenrider is shooting a career-best 85.5 percent from the free throw line this season and ranks among the PSAC leaders.  She scored a career-high 27 points her sophomore season and holds the school-record for free throws made in a game with 15 last season. Oxenrider is an Ashland native from Tri-Valley High School and will graduate in May with a degree in Elementary Education.

“Kayla is one of the most athletic players to go through the program,” Cleary said. “She was asked throughout her career to play a variety of positions. She always is willing to put the team first ahead of any personal accolades.”

Wieller has left her mark as one of the greatest scorers in Bloomsburg history.  She ranks on the all-time scoring list with 1,823 points. She is the all-time leader in career three-pointers at Bloomsburg with 322, which also ranks third in PSAC history. Wieller has played in 109 games in her career, and also ranks seventh at Bloomsburg with 210 career steals, and 11th in career assists with 256. She holds single-game schools records for three-pointers made and attempted, and the top three single-season records for three-pointers made.

Wieller has earned All-PSAC honors all three of her years at Bloomsburg including first team honors each of the last two seasons. This season, Wieller ranks second in the PSAC in free throw percentage, third in scoring and three-point percentage, and eighth in steals.  Wieller is a Bethlehem native from Liberty High School and will graduate in May with a degree in Business Education.

“Dana is a tremendous scorer and probably one of the best to ever come through the program,” Cleary said. “Her willingness to become a better overall player was evident in the work she put in. Dana is always willing to put the team ahead of anything else.”

After its game against Kutztown, Bloomsburg will travel to East Stroudsburg for its final regular season game of the season. Tipoff on Wednesday, Feb. 27 is set for 5:30 p.m.
