BLOOMSBURG – The last time the Bloomsburg University and Millersville University women's basketball teams met back in December, both squads were undefeated with the Marauders earning a victory on their home court. On Wednesday night, the Huskies get a chance at revenge on their home court, a place they have had tremendous success the past three seasons.
The Huskies (15-4, 11-4 PSAC) and Marauders (13-6, 10-5) will clash on Wednesday, Feb. 6 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Nelson Field House beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at
www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.
Bloomsburg is coming off a 79-68, come-from-behind victory over Kutztown on Saturday in which it used some stellar defense and some hot shooting from senior guard
Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) to overcome a nine-point deficit late in the first half.
Wieller dropped a season-high 31 points with seven three-pointers, one shy of her career-high 32 points and school-record eight three-pointers. She improved her season scoring average to 15.4 per game, good for second in the PSAC. She also rates second in three-point percentage (.388) and third in free throw percentage (.862).
Bloomsburg's perfect 17-for-17 performance at the charity stripe against Kutztown improved its season percentage to 76 percent, good for ninth in Division II. It was the
second time this season BU was perfect at the free throw line (9-for-9 vs. Gannon), and the 17 makes marks the most free throws made while shooting 100 percent dating back through the 2002-03 season.
The Huskies are 8-1 on their home floor this season with their only fault coming at the hands of West Chester earlier this season, snapping an 18-game home winning streak. Since the 2010-11 season, Bloomsburg holds an impressive 32-6 record on its home floor, an 84.2 winning percentage.
Junior guard
Catherine Noack (Bethlehem/Liberty) has turned it on over the last 10 games and gives the Huskies another threat from downtown. She is second on the team in three-point percentage (.358) and made three-pointers (34), and has scored in double figures in nine of her last 10 games. She's had two 20-point games this season, the second most on the team behind Wieller's five.
Wednesday will feature two of the top defensive teams in the conference. Bloomsburg leads the PSAC and ranks 17th in Division II in defensive field goal percentage (.345), and is fourth in the PSAC in scoring defense (58.3). Millersville ranks second in defensive field goal percentage (.353) and fifth in scoring defense (59.8).
The Marauders beat the Mountaineers of Mansfield, 75-49 on Saturday. Mashira Newman flirted with a triple-double, posting 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds to go along with four steals. Fellow redshirt senior Aurielle Mosley gave Newman frontcourt help, hitting for 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulling down seven rebounds. The reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, Mosley also blocked two shots, adding a steal and an assist in just 23 minutes. Millersville's defense was key in the victory, limiting the Mounties to 34.6 percent shooting and forcing 33 turnovers.
For the season, Mosley leads three double figure scorers at 14.6 per game along with a team-leading 8.4 rebounds per game, good for sixth in the PSAC. Also averaging double figures for Millersville are Newman (12.1) and Carly Gallagher (10.8).
After its game with Millersville, Bloomsburg remains at home to play Cheyney University on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Nelson Field House beginning at 1 p.m. BU will also host its second annual National Girl and Women in Sports Day beginning with a free basketball clinic hosted by the Huskies' women's basketball team starting at 10 a.m.
