Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) drove in a combined five runs to lead the Bloomsburg University softball team to a sweep of two games on Saturday on day one of the West Virginia Wesleyan tournament. The Huskies beat UMass-Lowell, 7-1, and West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1.
In game one the Huskies trailed 1-0 after the River Hawks scored in the top of the third inning. Offensively Bloomsburg had just one hit through the first three innings before breaking out in a big way in the fourth inning.
The bottom of fourth started with a fly out for the Huskies before
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) singled. After another fly out,
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) doubled putting runners at second and third.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) then followed with a three-run homer putting the Huskies on top 3-1. Erica Yanora followed Belko's blast with one of her own to make it 4-1.
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) and pinch-hitter
Cheyanne Bates (Tamaqua/Tamaqua) kept the rally going with back-to-back singles.
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) then tripled scoring both runners giving Bloomsburg a 6-1 lead.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then brought home Kuhns with a single for a 7-1 lead.
O'Connor went the first four innings to earn the win for Bloomsburg, while
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) going the final three innings.
In game two the Huskies fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning when the Bobcats scored an unearned run. The score remained 1-0 into the bottom of the fourth when
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern),
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) and
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) all singled to load the bases with no outs. After a flyout, Belko doubled down the line in right with McHale and Fredell scoring with pinch-runner
Erica Keen (Gordonville/Bishop Shanahan) getting cut down at the plate to put the Huskies up 2-1.
From there senior pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) allowed just one base runner over the final three innings and got the final out via strikeout to get the win.
Belko finished 2-3 with two RBI, while O'Connor, Fredell and McHale all got two hits. Paine allowed just two hits and one unearned run, while fanning 14 and walking just one.
Bloomsburg, 5-1, will play Fairmont State and Seton Hill on Sunday.
