SALEM, VA—The Bloomsburg University softball team beat Fairmont State, 6-1, on Sunday at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament being played in Salem, VA. The Huskies second game of the day against Seton Hill University was cancelled due to the tragedy on Saturday involving that school's women's lacrosse team.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern), who reached on a fielder's choice, later scored on a passed ball to put Bloomsburg on top. Fairmont State tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on solo home run.
Bloomsburg went back on top in the second inning scoring three times. After two were out
Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) singled and Mandy Black walked.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) then singled home Rehm to make it 2-1. McHale then delivered a triple scoring both Black and Baer for a 4-1 Bloomsburg lead.
In the top of the fourth the Huskies tacked on two more runs. Baer hit a sacrifice fly scoring
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock), who walked to lead off the inning. Later
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) singled home Rehm who had reached on an error.
Over the final four innings Huskies pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) allowed just two hits as she earned the complete game victory.
Baer finished the game 2-2 with two RBI, while McHale also drove in two runs, with Kuhns scoring twice. Paine gave up four hits and fanned six in the win.
