WINSTON-SALEM, NC—The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a pair of games from Winston-Salem State University winning 7-6 and 11-5.
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) went a combined 6-8 in the doubleheader to lead the Huskies.
In game one the Huskies scored single runs in the first and second innings to go up 2-0. Leading off the first Baer singled, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Erica Yanora. In the second
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) singled with two outs, moved to second when
Cheyanne Bates (Tamaqua/Tamaqua) reached on an error and later scored when Baer singled.
The Lady Rams tied the score with a pair of runs in the fourth before the Huskies regained the lead with two in the fifth. Baer scored one run on wild pitch, while
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) doubled in the second run. Bloomsburg made it 6-2 in the sixth. Kuhns doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a single by
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern). Yanora then doubled home McHale with the sixth run of the game.
Winston-Salem rallied on a grand slam by Yasmin Lee to tie the game at 6-6. But the excitement for the Lady Rams was short-lived as
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to put the Huskies back on top 7-6. In the bottom of the seventh WSSU brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but pitcher
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) got a fly out to end the game.
Baer and Kuhns both ended up 3-4, while Yanora and McHale each had two hits. Paine earned the win in the circle finishing with a walk and eight strikeouts.
In game two, Bloomsburg raced out to a 10-0 lead after four innings and went on to the 11-5 win. The Huskies led 3-0 after one inning with Fredell getting an RBI single and
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) a two-run single. It was 5-0 after two innings on run scoring singles by Yanora and Fredell.
Bloomsburg blew the game open in the fourth scoring five runs on five hits and with the help of three WSSU errors. The Lady Rams rallied in the bottom of the fifth scoring four times, but the Huskies tacked on a run in the sixth and went on to the win.
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) earned the win going the distance allowing five hits, striking out three and walking two.
O'Connor went 3-3 with three RBI for Bloomsburg, while Baer and Fredell also had three hits.
Bloomsburg, 8-3, plays at Catawba College on Thursday at 2 p.m. as it continues its spring break trip.
