Softball Team Splits Doubleheader on Thursday

SALISBURY, NC—Leann Bell (Lanse/West Branch) had a double that drove in the game's only run to help the Bloomsburg University softball team get a split of its doubleheader with Catawba College on Thursday. The Huskies won game two 1-0 after Catawba won the opener by a 1-0 score.
 
In the nightcap of the twinbill the Huskies started the game getting two runners on base with two outs, but Catawba's Emily Huneycutt induced a pop up to end the inning. The team's then traded zeroes on the scoreboard till the fourth inning.
 
In the top of the fourth, with one out, the Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) and Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) had back-to-back singles with Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) running for Fredell. After a pop up for the second out, Bell doubled down the leftfield line plating Carcasses.
 
Catawba threatened in the bottom of the fifth getting two runners on with one out. But Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) relieved O'Connor and got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
 
Bloomsburg put two runners on in the top of the sixth, but Paine struck out ending the threat for the Huskies. In the bottom of the seventh Catawba got a leadoff walk, but Paine got a pop up on a bunt attempt and fanned the last two batters to earn the save.
 
Fredell led the offense going 3-3, while O'Connor got the win going the first 4 1/3 innings.
 
In game one Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win. Tysinger fanned 13, walked just one and allowed just two hits.
 
The game's only run came in the sixth on a solo homer by Gina Gerone. Bloomsburg did threaten in the fourth inning, but could not score. With one out, Erica Yanora singled. After a strikeout, O'Connor reached on an error with Yanora going to third. But Tysinger got an inning-ending strikeout to keep the game scoreless.

Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) was the tough-luck loser for the Huskies allowing just four hits and striking out seven.
 
Bloomsburg, 9-4, plays at Fayetteville (NC) State on Friday at 2 p.m.
