PHILADELPHIA-The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a pair of games from Philadelphia University on Sunday by scores of 9-0, in six innings, and 3-0 in the nightcap.
The Huskies got strong pitching from
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) and big hitting from
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) in the opener. The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Lea Rhem reached on errors with
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) getting a single to load the bases. Black then delivered a ground rule double to put Bloomsburg on top 2-0.
In the fourth inning the Huskies made it 4-0 when Black singled scoring
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) with
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) adding an RBI single scoring Kuhns who had reached on an infield single. The Huskies made it 5-0 in the fifth when Erica Yanora singled to start the inning and two outs later scored when Belko tripled. In the sixth the Huskies added four more runs with Black getting an RBI triple scoring one run. Yanora later singled home a run followed by a two-run triple from
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ).
In the circle Paine allowed just four singles while striking out nine and not walking a batter.
In game two runs were not as easy to come by as in the opener. The team's were scoreless through the first three innings. Bloomsburg got a leadoff double from
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) in the first inning, but did not score, while the Rams had two runners on in the bottom of the first, but were kept off the board by the Huskies'
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) who started game two.
Bloomsburg finally broke through in the fourth inning. With one one
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) singled followed by Belko doubling to right center scoring Fredell with the first run of the game. In the fifth the Huskies got runners to second and third with two outs, but Philadelphia again worked out of the jam.
Philadelphia threatened in the bottom of the sixth. With one out O'Connor allowed back-to-back singles and was relieved by Paine. The Huskies lefty got a fly out for out number two before allowing a single to load the bases. Paine, though, got a fielder's choice to end the inning.
In the seventh the Huskies added two insurance runs. With one out Black and Baer both singled and moved up one base on a throw to put runners at second and third. Yanora then singled scoring both runners.
In the bottom of the seventh Paine put the Rams down in order to earn the save.
Baer and Fredell each finished with three hits, while Belko was 2-2. O'Connor got the win going the first 5 1/3 innings allowing five hits and striking out six and walking two.
Bloomsburg improves to 12-4, while Philadelphia falls to 10-12. The Huskies are back in action on Thursday hosting Georgian Court at 2:30 p.m. at Hutchinson Field.
