Husky Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Georgian Court

Cait Payne
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team opened its home portion of the 2013 season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Georgian Court in non-conference action.  After shutting out the Lions 2-0 in the opener, the Huskies overpowered GCU 10-1 in the nightcap.

Pitchers Cait Payne and Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) kept Georgian Court off balance all afternoon.  Both hurlers threw complete games and combined to allow just one unearned run in 12 innings on four hits.

A two-run third inning was more than enough in the first game for Payne, who twirled a one-hit shutout.  Payne surrendered a single to Dara Schroeder to open the game, then held the Lions hitless for the rest of the contest. She struck out 11 and walked three, improving to 7-3 on the year.

Two errors and a wild pitch fueled Bloomsburg's two-run third inning.  Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) scored Bloomsburg's first run on an error in the outfield and Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) came home later in the inning on a wild pitch.  Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) had the only Husky base hit of the inning, one of her team-best two hits in the game.

Paine outdueled Georgian Court's Deanna Daluise, who took the complete game loss.  She allowed three hits and a walk in six innings, striking out four.

In game two, Bloomsburg scored multiple runs in three of its four at bats to end the game after five innings.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) ripped a two-run single in the first and second innings as the Huskies went ahead 6-0. In the first inning, she drove in Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and Erika Yanora (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock) for a 2-0 lead.  After an RBI triple by Baer and a run scoring groundout by Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) made it 4-0 with two outs in the second, Belko knocked in the same two runners for a six-run lead.

After Yanora and Fredell singled to lead off the fourth inning, two errors on one play brought Yanora home for a 7-0 lead.  Black had an RBI groundout and Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) and Baer both singled in runs to give the Huskies a 10-0 lead through four innings of play.

Georgian Court went down fighting, scoring its only run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough as Bloomsburg's nine-run advantage ended the contest early.

O'Connor allowed just one unearned run in five innings to move to 5-1 on the year.  She struck out three and scattered three hits.

Baer had three hits in the game and drove in two runs.  Yanora scored three runs and had a pair of base hits.  Belko and Rehm also had muiti-hit efforts.

Schroeder had two more hits in game two for Georgian Court and ended the day with three of her teams four hits.

Illiana Teran lasted just 1.2 innings and surrendered six runs on six hits and two walks. Neither Teran, nor reliever Senna Francesconi struck out a Bloomsburg hitter in the game.

The Huskies carry a six-game win streak into its PSAC Central opener against visiting Indiana (Pa.) on March 30 at 1 p.m.
