BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University softball pitchers
Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) and
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) both threw complete game shutouts to lead the Huskies past Indiana (PA) on Saturday afternoon at Hutchinson Field.
In game one Paine mowed down the Crimson Hawks right from the start getting the first eight outs of the game via the strikeout. The senior lefty allowed just two hits in the game; a third inning single and a seventh inning double, while giving up one walk. In the seventh Paine stranded the IUP runner who had doubled by fanning the final two batters she faced.
Meanwhile IUP pitcher Alexa Campbell held the Huskies off the scoreboard despite allowing nine hits. The Huskies, though, stranded seven runners in the game. Bloomsburg finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh.
Chrissy Belko (Old Forge/Old Forge) singled to lead off the inning and
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) followed with an infield single. After a
Raychelle Kuhns (Williamsport/Loyalsock) flied out the throw back to the infield got past the IUP first baseman allowing Belko to move to third. After a ground out put runners at second and third, Baer delivered a single to right field scoring Belko with the game's only run.
Paine finished the game with 15 strikeouts, the fourth straight game against IUP in which she has struck out at least 15 batters. Overall in her last four starts against the Crimson Hawks she has 66 strikeouts.
In game two the Huskies
Caitlin O'Connor (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) allowed just three hits in pitching her second shutout of the year. Bloomsburg got all the offense it would need in the second inning when Belko led off the inning with a long homer to right center field.
In the third the Huskies made it 2-0 when
Rachel Fredell (Dingmans Ferry/Delaware Valley) homered to straightaway center. Then in the fourth the Huskies
Mandi Black (Huntington Mills/Northwest Area) doubled moved to third on a single by
Lea Rehm (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) and scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.
Bloomsburg made it 4-0 in the fifth when
Hannah Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape ) beat out and infield single scoring Fredell who had doubled and later moved to third on a ground out.
In the sixth the Huskies tacked on two unearned runs with the big hit coming from Erica Yanora who tripled to the right field corner scoring
Kayla McHale (Dillsburg/Northern) and
Mandi Baer (Douglassville/Daniel Boone).
O'Connor finished with four strikeouts and four walks to earn her sixth win of the season.
IUP falls to 10-7, 0-2 in the PSAC Central with the two losses, while Bloomsburg improves to 16-4, 2-0 in the PSAC Central.
The Huskies host Lock Haven on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
